這部影片是在日本帝國主義加緊侵略中國、民族危機日益加重的背景下創作的。當時報上每天都有青年因失業或失戀、意志消沉而自殺的新聞，也有愛國青年對敵鬥爭的事跡。除此之外，社會上也有不少青年人和徘徊在人生的“十字街頭”。沈西苓把這些素材和自己所接觸的一些人和事，有機地結合起來，構思了幾個不同性格的人物形象。影片中四位友誼深厚的青年--老趙、阿唐、劉大哥和小徐，他們都是大學生，但有的家鄉淪陷，有的失業，都生活在苦悶之中。小徐企圖自殺，在被老趙勸救之後回家鄉去了；阿唐則以佈置商店櫥窗糊口；老趙后來在報館作了校對，結識了女工楊芝瑛，並寫出了反映女工悲慘遭遇的報道；劉大哥則去北方參加抗戰工作。在劉大哥的影響下，老趙、阿唐、楊芝瑛由徬徨到醒悟，終於走上民族鬥爭的大道。
