Balladry from a mature artist
|
When Jiang Mei Chi first burst on the music scene back in 1999, she was wearing dreadlocks and looking like a punk rocker. Now she's all dressed up, our glamorous, grown-up Mei Mei! What a change! Her sound hasn't changed dramatically over the years. She always has had an exceptionally pure, sweet voice, but she has matured into a true artist. Listen carefully to these songs and you will hear superb tone control and very creative phrasing. She varies her singing style from song to song, which makes her a consistently interesting vocalist. She clearly pays attention to the lyrics and does a terrific job of interpreting them. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 on this album are the real stand-outs, heart-wrenchingly beautiful ballads. There are several memorable numbers elsewhere on the album. On her early albums, Melody would mix things up a bit by adding an edgy rock song or two. Those edgier numbers have disappeared and, consequently, this album suffers a bit from having too many songs in a similar style. All in all, I can highly recommend this album to all fans of beautiful ballads and sweet singing. |

Melodious Melody...
Melodious Melody...
|
Well, Melody Chiang has once again created a musical masterpiece. She seems to be one of those rare artists who keeps current with the times while still remaining generally true to her basic style that she's had for years. Only some updates to her sound is all that's needed to keep her on top of the Mandarin music scene with each release. And this CD is no different. It's definitely a more grown up and mature Melody, but it's still quite easily recognizable as the same tender and charismatic Melody of years ago. I think she has a great gift at adapting without losing herself...and that is a very special thing to devoted fans like myself who like to know what to expect from an artist from CD to CD. It's comforting to know that with Melody Chiang the fluidity that is anticipated in her music will be there, but there will also be a little something new and different to add to her depths as an artist...but nothing TOO new to detract from her overall balance. The songs themselves are some of the best to date (in my opinion) from Melody. Although, I confess, I tend to compare everything she does to my all-time favorite song by her "I'm OK" from her CD "Friend's Friend". Perhaps that is why track 11 on "Cry Baby" is my favorite on this release...it has the most guitar and reminds me closest to that old standard. Rounding out my Top 5 on "Cry Baby" are also tracks 2, 6, 7, and 8. Track 1= 45 second piano solo. Track 2 is a classically fluid Melody ballad, although it's almost mid-tempo for a ballad and a wonderful way to open the CD. Track 3 is a sweet ballad with a soft accepella intro and strong piano. Track 4 is mid-tempo and interesting in that it has an unusual beat to it and a children's chorus. It also merges some traditional instruments into the chorus along with the children singing to create the feeling of youthful days gone by. Track 5 is a gorgeous Melody song that is truly hypnotic, although it has the slightest hint of R&B in it's tone. Track 6 is where some of the strongest vocals on the CD can be found after an almost urban/heavy intro that leads into a powerful beat that blends majestically with Melody's sincere voice. Track 7 is a moving ballad with soft, caressing vocals and a lovely smooth transition from the song before it without sounding in any way disjointed. Track 8 is elegant...like rain. And like rain, this song is it's own magnificent yet peaceful force. A thing of rare beauty. Track 9 is a lilting tune that is uplifting and set to an unusual tone that actually adds some drama to the song. Track 10 is a rather standard ballad, but it's a duet (sorry, I have no idea who the male singer on this is...), so it stands out. Normally, I'm not a fan of duets, but Melody has a talent of picking male singers with whom she really musically connects to produce lovely co-arrangements (like "You're In Love" with Ben of BAD from "Friend's Friend"). The harmony on this is astonishingly pure and delightful. Track 11 is completely intoxicating and enchanting with it's great guitar-based tone and Melody's superb interpretation. This song just reaches out to the listener and doesn't let go. Track 12= 42 second piano solo. As for the music videos, the first two (for audio tracks 3 and 4) are just gorgeous and well-produced. There isn't much in the way of acting, but the special effects and scenery is stunning. The video for audio track 10 is pretty standard without all the effects and computer-generated charisma of the other two videos. So, I highly recommend this for those who like relaxing but NOT boring music sung by a gifted singer with a pristine voice that never dissapoints. If I had to pick one adjective for Melody (Mei Mei) it would be what I mentioned early on in this review: fluid. Her vocals, her style, her ordering of track placements on her CDs, her consistancy through the years in producing music...all fluid. Truly an amazing performer and one I know I will continue to listen to for quite some time...especially since she has that "something" that just never goes out of style. I really don't know how she manages to sound so contemporary on each release, but yet standard at the same time. Perhaps it's just because she knows herself and her ability so well. Whatever it is about her: it works. In every way, it just works. Beautiful. |
