YesAsia Editorial Description
Consisting of three vignettes about cross-cultural love set in three different cities (Tokyo, Taipei, and Shanghai), About Love is a film made by three talented directors with six fabulous young idols from Japan, Mainland China, and Taiwan. Cast includes Wilson Chen (Bluegate Crossing), Ito Misaki (Juon), Mavis Fan (popular Taiwanese singer), Kase Ryo (rising Japanese actor), Tsukamoto Takashi (Battle Royale), and Li Xiaolu (Golden Horse Best Actress for Xiu Xiu - The Sent Down Girl). In each segment, a foreigner and a resident, both in their twenties, try to transgress cultural and language barriers and explore something About Love. Beneath the three different types of relationships, there always lie something common that all couples need to go through - moments of uncertainties, confusion, and bittersweet tenderness. About yearning
|
"About Love" really is about youthful yearning for love and affection. The theme is depicted here in three engaging short films. The first film is the slickest and most sentimental and offers a sweet ending. The second film is the edgiest; it resembles a film school project. I identified with the male character's struggle to communicate and found the ending to be the most poignant. The third film is the most heartbreaking. The lead actors and actresses in all three films are gorgeous and handle their roles well. The filmmaking is naive, but absorbing. The time flew by as I watched this film; that's always a good sign! Highly recommended by your humble servant. |

Touching, Funny, Romantic

This movie of 3 stories has it all; humour, love, loneliness, friendship, sadness...the stories and styles of film-making are very different and each one is excellent. I almost feel like I got 3 movies in one, well worth the money! The first story set in Tokyo I would say caters to the romantics in all of us. A modern fairytale of love by chance in a big, lonely city. A good looking, young Chinese guy falls for a Japanese artist. The second story is more about realism I think, about the complexities of relationships and it's verious forms. But don't let the realism put you off, it is the most hilarious of the 3 and features the most adorable male character ever in the history of film! The third story is much more tragic. A Chinese girl is seretly in love with her Japanese lodger, but does nothing to reveal her feelings. The actress does an amazing job of conveying the innocence of first love, and I must say the ending left me quite speechless. To sum it up, watch it! There needs to be more movies like this. |

TOKYO - anyone who enjoyed the photography in Chung King express should love this film. it was all over far too soon for me. i think its a wonderful little story. i know i havent seen anything like it before. its worth buying the dvd simply for this film. 10/10 TAIPEI - i hated this one. i thought it was ok at the beginning and just got worse until i couldnt wait for the end. the japanese guys chinese sounded very poor, and while i know chinese is a difficult language to master, to have to listen to an absolute beginner with a very strong accent speak for a long time (and consistently get it wrong) was really grating. towards the end the girl asks the boy to pass on a message for her to her ex. when he gets back she asks him what her ex said. he spends the next 5 mins (literally) trying to tell her, making the same mistake over and over. we never do find out what her ex said! i never want to watch this film again. 1/10 SHANGHAI - this film is sweet and gentle, although i didnt sense any chemistry between the boy and girl despite a lot of interaction. i especially liked one scene where the girl looks at the boy through a glass. i thought this was a very clever and unique shot. 6/10 |

I bought this DVD because of the nice reviews. But I'm very disappointed! I don't know if we all watched the same movie or we are just from different planets. I think the film is quite a waste of time!! |

I saw this movie at the Hawaii International Film Festival last year. Wonderful film about cross cultural relationships in 3 different cities (Tokyo, Tapei, Shanghai). I liked the tokyo story the best. The tapei story gives you insight on how people use each other in relationships. Shanghai story was a bit strange but fun. |
