ドイツから亡命してハリウッドに渡ったダグラス・サークが『ヒットラーの狂人』、『夏の嵐』につづいて撮ったアメリカでの第三作目。１８０５年７月２３日の誕生日、ヴィドックはある小さな町の刑務所の中にいる。彼は『カサノヴァの冒険』を読みかけている。同じ房には囚人エミル・ヴェルネがいる。看守の娘ジャネットがこっそり誕生日のお祝いに来る。彼女はエミルのパリの叔母エルネスティーヌからケーキをエミルに渡す。エミルの叔父ユーゴーはオルレアン公邸に強盗に入り、１５年刑務所に入っていた。エミルの従兄弟ピエールも泥棒だという。エミルがケーキをかじるとヤスリが入っている。ヴィドックはヤスリで明かり窓の鉄格子を削り始める・・・。
