Would you live your remaining days to the fullest or sink into a sea of despair? Those are just some of the provocative questions at the heart of Daibyonin - The Last Dance, the moving 1993 film from acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Itami Juzo.

While in the hospital recovering from a near fatal, Yakuza-led knife attack, the famous director hatched the idea for Daibyonin - The Last Dance , centering his film on the character of Mikai Buhei (Mikuni Rentaro), an aging filmmaker directing a brand new project that features himself in the starring role. In the film within a film, Mikai portrays a famous, but cancer-stricken conductor who bravely rages the dying of the light while preparing for a final triumphant concert. The cruel irony of the entire situation, however, is that unbeknownst to Mikai, he is dying from stomach cancer!

In Japan, it is commonplace for both medical personnel and family members to hide the depressing facts about a patient's illness. This custom is rooted in the belief that by keeping the patient in the dark about the true nature of his or her condition, things will be much easier for everyone involved. But is that assumption really true? Or does the patient have the right to know? After all, it's only a matter of time before Mikai puts two and two together, so what happens when he uncovers the shocking truth about his health? Find out in Daibyonin - The Last Dance, a meaningful, often comic rumination on life and death reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa's powerful film Ikiru.
