Another 'coup d'eclat' from Lars Von Trier Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
DANCER IN THE DARK won several palms at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, which was quite well deserved. This is a stunning film regrouping a range of very different genres which constantly disappear and reappear throughout the story : it is a musical, a melodrama, sometimes even a comedy, the purpose of which would only to shift from it to give more impact to the actually terrifying issues which it raises. Up to its tragic end, the film has many highly dramatic scenes and relies greatly on Von Trier's filming techniques - more than Bjork's awkward performance. Eventually, if the film is a permanent confrontation between the director and his actress, which is a beautiful way to see it, the end is granted an even more efficient and powerful impact as the director steals the medal by simply getting rid of his actress... A must-see, raging but beautiful at times.
