Good grief! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
"Dances of Flame" is an uber-pretentious failed anti-war flick. The film's direction is inartful, its editing is crude, its cinematography is inconsistent. Speaking of inconsistent, its English subtitles change typefaces from line to line. Indeed, sometimes we see multiple typefaces within a single line. And those subtitles are filled with misspellings and obviously mistranslate some lines.

Yamaguchi Momoe over-emotes up a storm with lots of long, lingering looks meant to tell us that she's thinking deep thoughts. Miura Tomokazu generally just looks lost. And you'd get lost, too, trying to wade through a script freighted with such vapid sentiments.

The Yamaguchi/Miura pairing produced several enjoyable films, including "Izu Dancer", "Spring Koto", "Autumn Interlude", "Love in the Mud", and "Flag in the Mist". Stick with them and avoid this turgid mistake.
