2002年11月15日 A class act!!Finally!! The 2 EMI albums Michael released in the mid-80s have long been out of print on CD, and this EMI "Best Collection" have almost all the songs from them. While the songs presented here are not as well-known as those on his previous Philips/Universal releases, they retained Michael's smooth vocals while adding a touch of "risk taking" in the choices of material. The song "¸ô" (track 7), a cover of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Touch and Go", will be remembered as one of the best rock vocal performance in HK pop history, while "ªF¤è¤§¯]" (track 1) and "°Fªº±Ò¥Ü" (track 2) is smooth and dignified. Other tracks such as "¥j³£", "¥u¦³§A", and others continue to feature Michael's trademark vocal stylings and smooth delivery. I wish EMI put in Michael's duet with Danny Chan, "¥½°Ûªººq", on this CD as that would be a better song to show off two of the best HK pop singers. In the end, this is a great compilation of Michael Kwan's EMI output. If you are tired of today's bubblegum HK pop, get this CD to hear what real singing is all about. -
2002年9月10日 Pure Magic!
This "Best-of" gold CD collects some of Samantha Lam's best known post 1985 hits. While most newcomers to HK pop may not be familiar with Samantha Lam, but for her fans, this CD is a must. All of these songs, starting from track 15 from 1982, stands the test of time very well. The highlights here are track 1, 4, 6, 9, 13, and 15, but really, all of the songs on this disc are great. Track 2 is also a standout not only because it's an excellent song, but it was also written for Samantha by the late Danny Chan; the combination of 2 of the most elegant HK pop singers ever is pure magic. Samantha is in fine voice....sweet and pure, and dare I say, sexy. Highly recommended to both Samantha's fans and anyone interested in classy HK pop. A "Must-Buy"!! -
2002年8月21日 Ah Lam at his best!
What can you say? Excellent performance by Ah Lam! Featuring most of his hits (where's ·R¨ìµo¿N?), one can hear Ah Lam sang his heart out for his generally appreciative audience. While no longer able to hit the high notes as effortlessly as in his younger days, Ah Lam can still show the youngsters a thing or two about entertaining a live audience. However, the album should be mixed better as vocals can hardly be heard on some tracks. Also, the sound is quite lightweight, especially given the CDs are HDCD-encoded. Line most Warner Bros. CDs, the lyrics are extremely hard to read and there's no written credits for the musicians. In the end, a generally well-recorded live album with a superb performance by one of HK pop's legends. -
2002年8月5日 Great Concert CD
I'm glad Sony decided to reissue this album. This is a recording of ºÂ©g's 1984 concert featuring 2 new songs, "µL¼Ä¬O·R" w/ Sam Hui and "¥un¸òµÛ§A". This CD is the only place where you will be able to find the rare original recording of "µL¼Ä¬O·R", unless of course, you have the out-of-print CD of Sam Hui's ³Ì³ßÅw§A. There were quite a number of edits in the concert segment of the CD, with very little dialog. The performances are great, with a specially emotional rendition of "¦A«×©t¿W". I wish Sony could've included more of the concert since the disc is only about 55 minutes long. But nonetheless, this is a great concert CD from a great singer. -
2002年4月21日 Transformation!
This album is truly an important moment in HK pop. The album is about the transformation of Shirley Kwan from a run-of-the-mill pop singer to one of distinction. The album started great, with Shirley giving a great vocal performance on track 1 and 2. The duet with Hacken Lee, on track 3, was a disappoint due to Hacken's performance; his voice and vocal style just wasn't suited to the song. Everyone should know track 5 as it was a big hit. But it was the lesser-known tracks, like track 6-10 that really set this album apart. For example, track 8 - "Bloody Mary" as written and arranged by Dominic Chow, is just great; foreshadowing the vocal and music style that will set Shirley apart from her competition. Also, Shirley's performance was also much better, and looser, towards the end of the album. All in all, a very good album with good pacing and excellent performance by Shirley Kwan. Universal Music should really reissue all her early albums again. -
2002年4月10日 Closing the '70s with a BANG!!
A true landmark!! I am glad to see this album finally being reissued on an individual basis; it was previously released as part of a HUGE Sam Hui boxset. The opening track should be instantly recognizable to anyone; a true Sam Hui classic. Track 2 echos the feelings of many Hong Kong residents, even til this day. Sam Hui's covers of '50s rock 'n roll classics continues with Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" (Track 7), turning it into a HK pop music classic itself; perhaps Universal Music should add the long-rumored politically-charged version as a bonus track. The songwriting is of high quality, with excellent arrangements throughout the album. The songs have a more relaxed feel as only a few of the songs are satirical. This album was once chosen as "One of the Most Important '70s HK Pop Albums" by a HK music magazine. One listen and you'll "see" why. A "MUST-HAVE" for any HK pop fan. -
2002年4月2日 Not To Be Missed!!
This is a great CD!! Basically this CD rounds up most of the hits of The Wynners previous to the year 1983. Great songwriting and great performances from lead singers Kenny Bee, Alan Tam, and Bennett Pang. While most of the songs everyone will know, there are also songs on this CD like Reflections Of My Life(Track 9) and My Fare Share(Track 10) that everyone should hear because of the great performances. One can also hear how both the singers and their materials mature over the years. Universal Music should really proofread their printed lyrics as there are quite a number of mistakes in spelling. In the end, a great CD from one of the greatest band in HK pop. Not to be missed!! -

2002年3月19日 Listen Up!!You're probably asking "What? Yet another Sam Hui greatest hits album?" Well, I think this is one album that no one should pass up, not even Sam Hui fanatics like myself who owns every single Sam Hui CD. Why? For the first time, "I'll Be Waiting" appears on a Sam Hui album; previously it was only available on CD for Polygram's multidisc Pop History 1960-1990. And the version on this album is completely clean; none of the muffled sound or pops and clicks from the dirty master tape. Just by listening to this opening track, one can already hear Sam's immerse songwriting skills. But perhaps the biggest surprise is the cleaned up version of "You Made Me Shine". This song previously appeared on a self-titled 1995 Cinepoly Sam Hui greatest hits album. When I first heard it, the sound quality of this song was shockingly bad for a song recorded in 1979. The version of this album is vastly improved....like night and day. The rest of the album is comprised of some of Sam's best work. And I emphasize "some", as this album clocks in at less than 50 minutes. To truly do justice to the masterpieces of Sam Hui will require a retrospective of at least 4 CDs. Perhaps in XRCD, Universal Music? Highly recommended!! A "Must Buy" for any Sam Hui fan!! -

2001年12月27日 Can't get any better than this for HK pop!!Excellent concert of Michael Kwan with the HK Philharmonic, under the baton of Joseph Koo. As usual, Michael Kwan's performance is outstanding; most of his big hits from his Polygram years are here. If you go down the list of the songs presented here, you will hear some of the best HK pop ever sung and written. All classics, no fillers. The opening track, "One Voice", really show off how good of a singer Kwan was. Back by the HK Philharmonic, each song was presented with power and scale, while delicate and gentle at the right moment. This is a recording of a singer at his peak, with an audience that's fully appreciate of the artist. If you want to hear how good HK pop can be, this is one of the best place to start. HK pop of the highest caliber. A "Must-Buy"!! -
2001年12月22日 A Long Time Coming!!
It's been quite a while since we have a Connie Mak compilation. This compilation covers her Cinepoly years and her sole recording with the now-defunct World Records. Out of all the songs here, the tracks from her Cinepoly recordings clearly stand out as the more appealing ones. Her cover of ELO's "Rock 'n Roll Is King"(Track 9) is a classic, as is the cover of Pebble's "Girlfriend"(Track 12); Connie Mak make those songs her won with her unique interpretations. Other excellent tracks include Track 2, 3, and 5. Track 15 is actually a sequal of the song "Cut" from her days with Crown Records; this was a song rumored to be about the late actress Barbara Yung. If you have never heard any of Connie Mak's music, or you only known her as Kong Wah's wife, then get ready to be blwn away. An excellent collection. A "must buy" for any HK pop collection. -
2001年11月29日 Highly Recommended!!
Have to admit, I am a Sam Hui fanatic. But as much as I like him, this album is not Sam's best. The album starts off with an absolutely awesome track, the main theme to the movie "Aces Go Places II". And while the rest of the album contains some excellent songs like track 2, 3, and 12, it lacks some intangible quality of a classic Sam Hui album. The cover of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" is excellent; perhaps even better than Van Halen's cover of the same tune that came out at about the same time. Since I also own the original CD release of this album, I noticed the remastering really improved the sound of the album; the bass is much clearer than before. While it lacks the social commentaries and the witty sarcasm of Sam Hui's best work, this album is still better than most of what's out there. Highly recommended nonetheless. -
2001年10月16日 Wynners Live In Concert !!
An excellent live concert CD! The unplugged versions of various Wynners songs at the beginning of the CD was very refreshing, and was able to demonstrate the excellent songwriting involved. Kenny Bee's version of Bennett Pang's "Second Class Citizen" (Track 9) is excellent, and proves again that Kenny Bee is one of HK's best male vocalists. The tribute to Danny Chan, Teresa Teng, and Beyond was heartfelt. The accompanying CD single song of "Natural Relations" was great as well; a good song co-written by Kenny Bee. Surprisingly, this is the first producing credit by a member of the Wynners (Kenny Bee) on a Wynners song/album. An excellent concert recording which brings back a lot of good memories, yet staying very fresh. Strongly recommended for both Wynners devotees and new fans.

2001年10月9日 Incredible Debut From Paula Tsui
This is the first album from Paul Tsui for the then Polygram Records. Track #1 is a remake of Chyna's classic "Within You'll Remain", and Paula nailed this version right on. Of course, everyone should know track # 2 and track #4; true classics of the '80s HK pop scene. The rest of the album maintained very high quality songwriting, vocal performances by Paula, and production. This album may also mark the last appearance of guitarist Wallace Chow (Sam Hui's guitar player) as he pass away 2 years later; a true loss to the HK music scene. This album, however, is excellent. Glad Universal Music see fit to re-release this classic. -

2001年10月8日 Underappreciated Pop MusicOne of the most underrated female singers in HK pop music. This is Annabelle's second compilation CD, and it contains a good number of tracks from her 1985 album. The title track of that album is track #13 on this compilation, and it features Kenny Bee, Rowena Cortes, Priscilla Chan, and Jacky Cheung on background vocals. Another track from that 1985 album is track #17 with Agnes Cheung, which is one of the few duets featuring two female vocalists. The other tracks should be familiar to those who pay attention to the development of HK pop music. Great compilation for a great artist. Highly recommended!!

This is perhaps the best "Greatest Hits" package ever released for Sam Hui. Contain 4 gold CDs pressed in Japan, the sound quality of the Sonic Solutions remastered discs is the best that I have heard from any Sam Hui CDs, including the more recent dcs-remastered and Denon Mastersonics CDs. The package contains almost all the hits of Sam Hui's years at Polygram. I am amazed at Sam's performance/songwriting and all the musicians' (especially Wallace Chow) efforts in creating the most important music in HK pop music. What's missing are the songs from his years at Contec Sound Media and the much of his late 80s output. Also missing are musicians' and producers' credits and perhaps some kind of liner notes. But if you are a fan of HK pop, this title is a must. Can't go wrong with Sam Hui, especially on gold CDs.
