Huang Xiaoming (The Sniper, Shanghai Bund) is probably at the forefront of Mainland Chinese actors right now, having appeared in some high-profile movies and TV series in recent years. His latest starring vehicle is the 33-episode drama series Dark Fragrance about the rise and fall of a big family clan over several generations. It features Huang opposite rising starlets Wang Luodan (Struggle) and Yang Mi (Chinese Paladin III), as well as acclaimed actors Lei Kesheng (Stemma Legendary) and Jia Ni (Tangerine is Red).

Directed by Hero City's Yang Wenjun, Dark Fragrance is the first television production to be granted the permission to shoot in the "Bird's Nest" and the "Water Cube", the main venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Huang Xiaoming plays Cheng Yuan, the heir to the rich and powerful Cheng family based in Southeast Asia. Pursuing studies in the United States, Yuan is on a flight back home to attend his father's funeral and to make plans for his own marriage, when he meets a couple of Chinese travelers. The man, Li Kejin, is wrongly arrested for possession of marijuana, and the woman, Wu Yue (Wang Luodan), pleads with Yuan to save him, but Yuan is already mired deep in the chaos and conflicts within the family following the death of his father...

二十世紀初，一艘開往南洋的豬仔船，把少年程大帶到了南亞，他在那裏發跡，歷盡坎坷終成一代南洋華人富商。百年之後的世紀之初，程家第三代繼承人程仁在南亞金蟾島暴卒，獨子程遠從美國歸來奔喪。因為從小在美國長大，程遠與家族隔閡，雖然少年英才，集萬千寵愛為一身，卻特立獨行，為調查父母死因接任了程氏集團董事長一職。

　　為了查找真相，程遠在南亞歷經陷害和謀殺，對程家勞苦功高卻性格剛烈的二姐；對程氏集團舉足輕重卻居心叵測的七叔；從小一起長大的外甥皮皮卻嫉妒仇視舅舅。只有父親的老友、費氏唯一的繼承人麗達支持他。而麗達與他青梅竹馬的愛情，似乎也正要開花結果。過程中，程遠意外結識了一位來自中國北京的女孩伍月。伍月率真可愛，開朗無忌，因在旅遊途中，為程遠所累滯留金蟾島，男友也鐺啷入獄危在旦夕。於是兩個背景完全不同的年輕人相約攜手追凶，卻終因性格迥異而衝突不斷，誰也沒想到，他們在看似瘋狂的打鬧爭執中，已然情愫暗生。

　　當程遠一步步接近真相之際，更大的危機卻向他襲來。他發現七叔利用集團公司走私人口，毅然決定公佈真相，挽救家族名譽，卻又引來新的暗殺行動。伍月為程遠受傷瀕死，這使程遠痛心不已。為了伍月的安危，程遠不惜放棄程氏集團董事長的位置...。
