Darling Stay At Home Was the only modern film starring Betty Le Di since she joined MP&GI. She played a housewife who refused to let her talents abandoned at home and played a trick on her stubborn, old-fashioned husband (Zhang ang). Her success not only changed her husband’s mentality but also represented a strong declaration of women’s capabilities at a time when many women were still made to stay at home. For many years Betty was honored as the “Classic Beauty” for her counties portraits of classic beauties in the wangmeldiao genre. But in Darling Stay At Home, Betty demonstrated her remarkable acting skills through her successful portraits of a submissive housewife and a capable working lady, which extended her reputation t being far more than just a “Classic Beauty” .

Diverting romantic comedy
|
Betty Loh Ti had a very busy schedule in 1968, the last year of her life. She starred in four movies during that crowded year, including "Darling, Stay at Home". "Darling" is a comedy about a young wife, who yearns to gain the satisfactions of having a career, and her husband, who believes that a wife should stay at home. Zhang Yang stars as the husband; he is the public relations manager at Kowloon's famed Peninsula Hotel. Loh Ti is his wife. In her spare time, she has learned to speak many foreign languages and longs to put her language skills to work in a job. Zhang, however, insists that she remain a housewife. Miss Loh's neighbor learns of a job opening at the Peninsula Hotel; Miss Loh applies for it, gets it, and is assigned a job in her husband's department. By wearing a wig and a fake mole and by adopting different clothes and mannerisms, she manages to fool her husband into thinking that this new employee in his department is not his wife. Mr. Zhang doesn't want to work with a woman; he concocts a scheme to make his new employee look bad so he can fire her. However, Miss Loh learns of the scheme and manages to turn it to her advantage. Instead of getting fired, she ends up getting promoted to being Mr. Zhang's boss (on her first day on the job)! Things then turn very wild when Mr. Zhang begins to develop a romantic crush for his new boss. If all of this seems a bit unbelievable, well, check your credulity at the door. Zhang Yang does a nice job by fully committing to his rather obnoxious character. Loh Ti seems a bit subdued, not nearly as lively as she was in "The Dancing Millionairess". (Fans will recall that she made "Darling, Stay at Home" on the heels of her divorce from Chen Ho.) Expectations about marital roles have changed so dramatically in the 40 years since this film was released that much of the comedy of "Darling, Stay at Home" seems dated ... as does this film's hideously garish late 1960s decor. Moreover, while the film was shot in widescreen "CathayScope", it is presented here in a sub-par, truncated fullscreen version. Nonetheless, I can recommend this film as a pleasantly amusing diversion that examines social mores that we, blessedly, have left far behind. |
