In the autumn of 1941, after a long, final night of laughing, drinking, and women, the U-96 and its 43 man crew cruises out from the German submarine base at La Rochelle. Deep under the dark waters of the Atlantic, the narrow tube creeps aimlessly as the crew begins to suffer the brutal effects of extreme claustrophobic conditions and agonizing monotony. Then the real test of endurance begins… Engaged in full force battle under a deluge of depth charges, the ship finally surfaces just in time for the crew to view firsthand the true horrors of war. When the severely damaged boat returns home, a different crew emerges from the hull. Unclean, unshaven, mentally and physically exhausted, the men stumble out to a welcoming committee of uniformed officers and beautiful ladies. …only to find that neither the war nor the combat is over.
