故事發生在太湖邊﹐一姓周漁民帶領女兒瓊珠﹑慧珠以打漁為生。一天﹐父女在市上賣魚﹐被債主的收帳人遇見﹐攔路強行逼債。青年崔時俊路見不平出來相助。瓊珠對時俊的仗義深表感謝﹐兩人產生好感。時俊在藝專學習成績優良﹐得到東家父女的喜愛﹐東家欲將女兒張國瑛配給時俊﹐崔父滿口應承。但時俊不愛國瑛﹐拒絕婚事﹐父子為此反目。時俊去湖邊尋訪瓊珠﹐不幸撞上石岩﹐被瓊珠父女救回家中調養﹐時俊和瓊珠情感日深。崔父得知獨生子在漁民家﹐親自去找并逼時俊與張家訂婚﹐時俊不肯﹐崔父大怒﹐揚言脫離父子關系。時俊毅然離家﹐決心去上海謀生。行前征得周父同意﹐與瓊珠訂了婚。時俊在上海得到了追蹤前來的國瑛的幫助﹐使他感激異常。但國瑛扣壓了瓊珠的來信﹐并假冒時俊寫信給瓊珠﹐稱其已在上海另訂婚姻。瓊珠得信如晴天霹靂﹐憤而投湖﹐但被救。國瑛知此﹐深感內疚﹐說明真相﹐促成時俊和瓊珠的婚姻。
It happened on the bank of Tai Lake.Mr Zhou,who ia a fisherman,earned a living on fishing with his daughters Qiongzhu and Huizhu.One day,they happened to meet the the account collector of the creditor when tehy three were selling fish in the market,and they were forced to pay off the debt.Seeing this,a young man named Cui Shijun helped them.Qiongzhu greatly appreciated Shijun's help and they two cottoned to each other,the master father and daughter felt good of Shijun since he did very well in art school.The father were going to marry the daughter and Shijun.For sure Shijun's father agreeed.But Shijun didn't love Guoying and rejected the marriage,the father and son fell out for this.Shi Jun went to the lakeside to visit Qiong zhu,but was knocked at the stone unfortunately,finally he was rescued by Qiongzhu and her father,the emotion between them was deep on day.Father Cui learned the son was engaged with the Zhang's while looking for and forcing in person at fisherman's home.Shijun decided to leave home resolutely,and went to Shanghai to make a living.With the agreement of father Zhou before leaving,he engaged with Qiongzhu.When Shijun got great help from Guoying,who tracked him to Shanghai,he was greatly moved.But Guoying withheld the letters from Qiongzhu,and even personate Shijun to write to Qiongzhu.telling her the lie that she had been engaged with someone else in Shanghai,It was so great a shock for Qiongzhu that she went to drawn herself.butfinally rescued.Guoying was very sorry for that,and told the whole truth,which…Shijun and Qiongzhu's marriage.
