Ineffable, atmospheric, and unforgettable
|
"Days of Being Wild" is the kind of movie that leaves some viewers contemplating it for days and others wondering what the heck they just watched. Count me in the former camp. The film lacks a conventional narrative structure; there is no real plot. The film opens with a series of scenes in which devastatingly handsome York (Leslie Cheung) repeatedly seeks to seduce gorgeous but shy snack bar girl Su Lizhen (Maggie Cheung). However, once he has managed to get her into his bed, York has no further use for Lizhen. He next manages to win the affections of saucy cabaret dancer Mimi (Carina Lau), but again York is unsatisfied by the relationship. York's friend Zeb (Jacky Cheung) pines for Mimi, but she cares only for York. And heartbroken Lizhen turns to beat cop Tide (Andy Lau) to vent her sorrows. Underlying York's restlessness is his desire to find his real mother and his disgust at the neediness he sees in his adoptive mother's relationship with a man who beds her while he takes her money and steals her jewelry. With these elements, director Wong Kar Wai brews up a steamy stew of a movie, luxuriously captured by the indelibly muted lensing of cinematographer Christopher Doyle. Director Wong coaxes full-bodied, affecting performances out of each of his cast members, but for me the real standouts are Leslie Cheung as York, who subsumes his inner torment in serial womanizing, and Carina Lau, whose sex appeal is strong enough to peal paint off the walls. If there is a theme to this film, perhaps it is about how people react when they cannot get what they really want. York cannot get his mother; Zeb cannot get Mimi; Mimi cannot have York; Tide cannot have the career he wants; Lizhen first cannot keep York, then cannot reach Tide. I have two relatively minor complaints. First, the English subtitles on this Mega Star DVD are subpar, particularly in the opening scenes. Second, and more seriously, the explosion of violence that occurs when York journeys to the Philippines in search of his mother seems forced; it doesn't really flow from what precedes it in the film. It leaves me wondering whether the filmmakers were required to include it in order to get financing to make the movie. Nonetheless, I recommend "Days of Being Wild" very highly. It is an unforgettable film that I'm sure will richly reward repeated viewings. |

A little disappointing for me after all the rave reviews I've seen. I expected a lot more. Leslie of course did not disappoint, he was excellent. However, I'm a little puzzled as to the pictures on the dvd cover showing Tony Leung, etc (presuming scenes from the movie), but they were NEVER in the movie. Tony Leung only appeared in one last scene showing him all dressed up. Where did his character fit in??When Carina Lau arrived in Manila to track Leslie, did she discover that he was dead? Does any other fans feel the same??? |

Another HK Movie Classic
|
Excellent charactors, excellent acting, excellent directing, excellent cinematography, excellent makeup, excellent art direction, the list goes on, and on.... The emphasis of this movie is not so much on the story line but more on the charactors personalities, and the mood and portrait of 1960's Hong Kong. It's more of an impressionist piece of art rather than a novel to tell a story, and inevitably meant for mature audience. |

Warning: don't watch unless you're a fan of Wong K
|
OK so where shall I start, oh yeah this film is so slow and mostly very uninteresting(until the last 15 minutes of the film) and the total silent atmosphere for most the film just made this film even more of a dull and boring film to watch, but luckily this film was set in a beautiful 60's Hong Kong setting and the dullness of the film was balanced out by some exceptional performances from the entire cast. These type of movies is probably what makes Wong Kar Wai so uniquely different compared to other Hong Kong directors, well since I am talking about Wong Kar Wai, I personally think he is quite overrated considering that I have seen most of his most famous films like Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Ashes of Time and I personally don't think they're as good as what people say they're(well this might be because I am more of a John Woo, Johnie To, Tsui Hark and Lau Wai Keung kind of a guy). Oh well back to the film, when you have watched about an hour of this film, you tend to kind of ask yourself ''OK so where is this film actually heading and when is this film going to become more interesting'' because all you have been watching for the pass hour is about this guy(Leslie Cheung) who sleeps with these two girls(Maggie Cheung and Lau Ka Ling) and then he dumps them and heads off to the Philipines in search of his real parests and then these 2 girls recieved some counciling from the other 2 actors (Andy Lau-the only reason why I brought this movie and Jackie Cheung). The other comments I would like to make about this film is that why does the women who plays Leslie's mother speaks this unusual and super lightning fast dialect(50% Mandarin/30% Cantonese/20% Japanese) when she can perfectly speak in Cantonese(considering this is a Cantonese film). Conclusion: Although this is a very dull and slow but well acted in a beautifully 60s Hong Kong setting, this type of film is undoutedly a very unique kind of style which is used by Wong Kar Wai and if you're a fan of Wong Kar Wai films then I would reccommend this film but if you're are the action and exciting plot type then this is definitely not the film for you. |

just to let you know, WKW never claimed that In the Mood for Love was the part 2 of Days of being Wild. He did mention however that if viewers preferred, they could regard ITMFL as the part 2. nonetheless, both films are really good. try to catch them if possible. leslie, maggie and tony are excellent in their roles. |

Answer to Carol

Try to use some of you imagination, please! The Director don't have to answer all the question ,so Let me answer you question, Leslie Cheung end up die in the train, Andy Lau Still work on the ship, Tony Leung's scene is the begining of the film call 'In the mood for love', you can find out Maggie Cheung act the same charactor in these two film ("Days of being wild" is 1960 and "In the mood for love" is 1962), so "in the mood for love is the second part of "Days of being wild", and don't say you still don''t understand please. |
