YesAsia Editorial Description

Legendary filmmaker Zhang Che (a.k.a. Chang Cheh) puts a Hong Kong spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet love story with the groundbreaking Shaw Brothers production, Dead End, a thrilling tale of undying love, true friendship, and bitter tragedy! Released in 1969, the film stars Di Lung as Zhang Chung, a sensitive young rascal who finds himself hopping from job to job, woman to woman in the latter part of the Swinging Sixties! While driving around with his best friend (David Keung) and his sometime lover (Angela Yu Chien), Zhang spots a young woman in a broken-down Mercedes. Played by baby queen Li Jing, the beautiful girl turns out to be the daughter of a super wealthy businessman. Although she and Zhang are clearly from different worlds, once they meet, the two develop an instant chemistry and quickly fall in love with each other!

Unfortunately, not everyone approves of this unconventional, but happy romance, most notably, the girl's elder brother (Chan Hung Lit) who goes so far as to threaten Zhang at his workplace, costing him yet another job. Thus, the two embark on a cycle of revenge in which there is no turning back, locking them both on a collision course with one another. Furious, Zhang retaliates by destroying the family's once stellar reputation. Sadly, this only leads the vindictive brother to gather together some cronies to take revenge, a decision that leads to the murder of one of Zhang's closest allies! As Zhang and his adversary reach a literal and metaphorical dead end, who will end up surviving? And can love prevail over all? The answer lies in Zhang Che's Dead End, a winning tale from the Shaw Brothers film library that launched Di Lung's acting career and kicked off a whole new wave of films that lasted for more than half a decade!

Product Information

導演:張徹
Director: Chang Cheh

In the mid-sixties Chang Cheh changed the face of female dominated films with his male dominated, violent kung-fu films. Dead End was the start of a new force that lasted 6 years, the first film to star David Chiang and Ti Lung under director Chang's discerning eye. The trouble all begins when Chen Hung-lieh's character disapproves of Ti Lung's character courting his sister.

Di Lung's first starring role Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Dead End" features a dashing young Di Lung as Zhang Chung, a rebel without a cause. With a loving mother who spoils him, the ability to land good (if tedious) office jobs, a loyal friend (David Chiang), and the love of a beautiful bar girl (Angela Yu Chien), one might think that Zhang would be happy as a clam, but instead he boils with a self-destructive, self-loathing yearning for something more. Zhang thinks he finds that something more when he becomes enraptured with rich girl Li Jing. But the rich girl's family won't stand for their princess dating her downmarket hero. After Zhang recovers a gun dropped by an escaped convict, the stage is set for an explosive confrontation between the young rebel and Li Jing's wealthy family.

Director Chang Cheh supplies a sure hand at the helm of "Dead End", but, as with most of the "troubled youth" films made by Shaw Brothers in this era, the story is told in an awfully heavy-handed manner. Moreover, Di Lung's character is such a hot-headed, self-involved jerk that he simply becomes tiresome. On the other hand, I really appreciated Angela Yu Chien's role here. Her "bad girl with a heart of gold" performance provides the real heart of the film.

"Dead End" is the film that introduced Di Lung to the world and his charisma is obvious right from the first scene. I can recommend the film to watch this magnetic star being born. Note that "Dead End" is not primarily an action film; its emphasis is on drama, not on fisticuffs. While my favorite "troubled youth" film from Shaw Brothers remains "My Son" (starring Jimmy Wang Yu), "Dead End" is worth a look. (I watched the DVD version of this film, which appears to have gone out of print.)

A classsic !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the rare film in which Ti Lung took the leading role ahead of David Chiang. Usually it's the other way around. Ti Lung did not disappointed in his role as the rebelious anti social youth who falls in love with a upper class heiress Li Jing. Of course the affair end in tragic but the film is great in reinforcing the theme of true love and true friendship. A collection item and a must have for Ti Lung fan.

Dead end Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
Nothing so impressive about this movie. Too much dialogue, less action and quite bored theme... Director Chang Cheh had far better movies than this such as "The deadly duo", "The heroic ones", "The new one armed swordsman"...

Give this movie what it deserves Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I have waited a long time to see this movie again and I was so disappointed that there is no DVD version. Just like the earlier reviewer, I wonder why is this wonderful movie not released in DVD? It was a debut starring role for Di Lung and the social themes of the disengaged youth and social elitism are still relevant for today's society. I really hope Celestial Pictures will re-consider its decision. Far worse movies than this have been released in full glory in DVD format. Dead End deserves a better treatment.
