High school student Rina (Kitagawa Keiko) has never believed in friendship, seeing it more as a relationship of convenience than something from the heart. Because of this, she maintains distance with everyone around her, be it classmates or family members. When Rina is diagnosed with a serious illness, she finds herself alone in the hospital. During this time, elementary school classmate Maki (Motokariya Yuika), whom Rina doesn't remember, keeps visiting and trying to give her support, but Rina resists. As health and hope begin to slip away though, she realizes the only thing she has left to hold on to is this friendship.

Based on a work by renowned author Yoshi, youth film Dear Friends reaffirms the value of life and friendship amidst the cynicism of contemporary society. Directed by Morosawa Kazuyuki (Keep on Rocking), the film touches on the lives and perspectives of the teenage generation with an engaging and affecting story, headlined by rising actresses Kitagawa Keiko (Mamiya Kyodai) and Motokariya Yuika (Swing Girls). Dear Friends starkly shifts pace and tone when Rina's fast, self-absorbed lifestyle gives way to stubborn solitude, highlighting how fragile and transient one's understanding of life can be.
