Thumbs up Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I first heard about this singer was when I went back to my country for holiday. Ding Wei, who is she? And my sister introduced her to me. Honestly, her music blew me away. Her music is a bit unconventional (especially her debut album). She has been in a cocoon for a few years to contemplate and I was thrilled to see her new release. I thought such an amazing singer has not gained her recognition and dwindled away. Luckily she did not. I just realised she has released this new album a few weeks ago though the CD was laucned worldwide 6 month ago. This CD, Dear is very different from her debut album. Less explosive but still brilliantly done. I am very impressed with the overall arrangements and the programming of all the songs. I really love the arrangement for Track 5 "@" The lyric is a bit dark and obscure. The last line talking about praying to Buddha with joss stick, eat vegetarian food and some chanting to finish the song . The music is slightly creepy, and the lyircs really works. Track 2 is slightly rock or should I say alternative as some arragements of the songs sounds a bit edgy. I like how she uses elctronic instruments to sing a love song. Track 3 sounds like a very safe and commercial piece. In fact, it sounds Taiwanish. It is still beautiful with the piano and the guitar. Lovely ballad. Track 4, the prelude instantly brings me to somewhere exotic like Africa, watching animal at Safari or wathing the natives dancing. I love a good preludes and interludes. If it is good, it brings me to a new place. I think track 6 is nice. I love how they use violin to build up a sorrow moments and other instrument to together that instantly makes the track sounds very contemporary and slightly new age. The mix makes me think, contemplate and gosh it works, very effective. Track 7 suddenly become so simple with acoustic guitar and a bit of drum and double bass. When the bass slowly becoming more prominent, it becomes very jazzy. I can imagine in a smoky club with a lady, gorgeous dress singing on the stage with guitar, jazz and the drum. Track 8 is explosive. Start slow and the chorus, wow exploded with the electrying guitar. I like how they manipulate her voice and a sudden stop caught me by surprise. Track 9, lovely prelude. Love the sound of violin. The prelude reminds me of a song from Bjork. I think the song is Joga if I am not wrong. Track 10, the last track is very Bjork. I like how she start slow and soft, it makes me to wonder what is coming next. The arragement is very Bjork. The CD has 2 bonus track which caught me by surprise as it did not mention anywhere in the packaging. This is a fantastic track, I love the string instruments. The interlude with the flute just blow me away. It was track 5 Girl with 4 Movements on her previous album. The other bonus track which is track 8 Winter has Come, again so passionate, and very emotional. I just love the choir. It sounds almost Russian. I was imagining something sad with the music, very moving. The interlude sounds like some Russian soldiers marching on a carpet of snow. At times, the music is so moving that I picture the Jews walking helplesslyto the Gas Chamber. Too much! This CD has used many string instruments. This is a beautiful CD. She is smart with amazing talent. Since I am from both musc and graphic background, of course I have to mention the CD packaging. It is a safe package without much extra like Hong Kong packaging. Well, I guess such a brilliant singer like Ding Wei does not need fancy packaging. The songs speak for itself. Thumbs up from me.
