YesAsia Editorial Description

The classic stories of Chinese author Gu Long come alive in Death Duel, a powerful Shaw Brother's swordplay epic starring some of the period's biggest stars! Derek Yee is Third Master, a renowned swordsman whose position in "Jiang Hu" (or the "World of Martial Arts") is lofty, and a constant frustration for the weary Third Master. The constant challenges and myriad enemies he faces compels him to fake his death and pursue a quiet life with the beautiful Candice Yu. However, his peace can only last so long. Many past enemies arrive seeking revenge, culminating in a bloody showdown, and an appearance by Shaw Brothers kung fu veteran (and Derek Yee's real-life brother) David Chiang!

Also starring Di Lung and Law Lit, Death Duel is another foray into the complex kung-fu novels of Gu Long, which derive their action and drama from the concept of Jiang Hu. Warriors jockey for personal satisfaction and reputation, and clans compete for the ultimate glory of being known as the world's acknowledged best. Director Chor Yuen brings Gu Long's beloved world to life with exciting action sequences and the gorgeous sets and costumes which were a Shaw Brothers trademark.

Product Information

This martial arts spectacular showcases 20-year-old Erh Tung-sheng (a.k.a. Derek Yee). Even Variety noted: "Erh's charismatic screen presence should take him to superstardom like hi solder brother, David Chiang." The prediction proved correct, and his performance as ace swordsman Third Master is just what any producer would want. He fights evil, saves damsels in distress (including a kindhearted prostitute played by Chow Yun-fat's first wife, (Yu An-an), and duels rival swordsmen to the, well, death.

A MUST for WUXIA FANS Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The action is only mediocre when you go by today’s standards. However, this film is still far superior to most wuxia films before and after it because of the storyline, acting, cinematography, and pacing. No film out there (maybe with the exception of the Swordsman I & II) better depicts the motivations and trial and tribulations of the characters in the imaginary world known as wulin (wuxia society). For the purposes of not spoiling anything, this film basically shows WHAT IS WULIN and WHY IT EXISTS. It stays focused on the characters and their motivations and wastes little time on the unnecessary love triangles and “quests to learn the ultimate martial arts” that hinder the pacing and storylines of so many wuxia novels and adaptations. The cinematography was very successful in conveying the very dark world these characters live in. The actors brought life and intrigue to their characters. Bonus: for those who love these films for the pretty damsels in distress, Candice Yu On-On certainly doesn’t disappoint. Very hard not to fall in love with her after this film.

This film is a must for anyone who wants to understand or is a fan of the Wuxia Genre.

The plot is weak, I was expecting more. It's not as good as I would anticipate.

Death Duel Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Unlike other Ku Lung's based movies, this movie has far too simple plot. It is about a swordman, tired of fame and has tried to keep low profile but is forced to fight back. The intent to watch this movie probably is because of Erh Tong Sheng ( afterall this is his very first lead movie ).
