Popular manga series Death Note first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2003. With its anti-hero protagonist, dark psychological themes, innovative premise, and unpredictable plot twists, Death Note was an instant hit, amassing an avid readership in its three years of serialization. It was later published in a 12-volume set in multiple languages, selling 18 million copies worldwide. In 2006, the manga was adapted into two big-screen films starring Fujiwara Tatsuya and Matsuyama Kenichi, both of which became blockbuster successes throughout Asia. From October 2006 to June 2007, Death Note also graced television screens as a popular Nippon TV anime series.

Aired in August 2008, Death Note: Rewrite 2 - L wo Tsugu Mono (a.k.a. Death Note: Relight 2 - L's Successors) picks up the story after Death Note: Rewrite - Vision of God, the previous special Director's Cut compilation episode aired in August 2007. Death Note: Rewrite 2 continues to follow Light in his death god escapades, this time battling L's successors Mello and Near. The DVD release version includes deleted scenes.
