The Hume family lives a typical middle class life. Nick Hume is employed at a life-insurance company. His wife Helen is the dean at the local school which their sons, Brendan and Lucas attend. Brendan is a promising hockey talent, popular, and full of confidence. And, of course, Lucas is jealous of the attention Brendan gets.
Driving home from a victorious hockey game in a "bad" part of town, Nick and Brendan discuss Brendan's dream of moving to Canada to play hockey. The stop at a little convenient store for gas and Brendan goes in for a drink while his father waits by the car. Two muscle cars screech to a halt in front of the store and a horde of ganbangers charge in armed with shotguns and machetes. They murder the clerk and a young gang member, in a heartbeat, slashes Brendan's throat open. Brendan falls to the concrete gasping and bleeding to death. Nick, full of rage and shock, runs to his son's aid and is able to catch a glimpse of the murderer's face before he escape...
