Suspense-filled thriller
The word "Hitchcockian" was coined to apply to movies like "Death Traps". The protagonist has a character flaw that, when indulged, enmeshes the protagonist in an intrigue in which her life is endangered. It is the classic Hitchcock plot. Here Li Mei does an effective job as the flawed central character. She definitely has a subtly sexy and charismatic star power. While the movie is uneven, it is an effective thriller and will keep you engrossed right to the end. Highly recommended by your humble servant. |

BRAVA again for LI MEI !!! Great "film noir" resur
Fans of classic Cathay films has good reason to rejoice this month, after an agonized wait of ONE full year, PANORAMA had resume releasing these classic CATHAY film jems (last year Li Mei's "Between Laughter and Tears" was released about October),--not only one but TWO Li Mei films, each showcasing this extraordinary actress' varied talents. In "Death Traps", she was the femme fatale being chased by hoods all over Macau, she layered this cliche woman-in-distress role with her usual distinction and come out like ....a "greater Lana Turner mixed with Ava Gardner" !!!! Had HK film noirs taken hold of the movie going public back then, Li Mei no doubt would have become the super seductress for young and old alike ! If you think Anita Mui was seductive (of course when she was still alive) Li mei would be 10 times as much--I can still feel the audience going wild when she made personal appearances on stage...it is time to re-visit this superwoman thru these re-issues of her neglected work: PANORAMA bring on "Its Always Spring", "Bedside Story" and yes--what about that color spectacle "Calendar Girls" and "Empress Dowager" !!!!! We are waiting anxiously ! |

Great to see the Cathay releases resume!
There are some great movies in the MP&GI/Cathay library awaiting re-issue and re-discovery. Some resonable pains taken with quality control, and canny promotion, will help bring this series the success it deserves! |
