アメリカの、大富豪の娘デボラ（Ｃ・ベーカー）は、イタリア生まれのマルセル（Ｊ・ソレル）と結婚し、彼の故郷ジェノバを訪れた。その地でマルセルは、旧友のフィリップから、昔の愛人スーザンがマルセルに棄てられたのを悲観して自殺した、と聞かされた。自責の念にかられたマルセルは、デボラをつれて、かってスーザンが住んでいた家を訪れたがそこはすでに廃家同様。そこへ脅迫電話がかかってきた。死んだスーザンの霊をなぐさめるため、デボラに死んでもらうと。二人は逃れた。デボラは半狂乱だ。そしてある夜、フィリップが訪れ、デボラを殺そうとした。マルセルが、とびだしてきてデボラを助けたものの、 誤ってフィリップを殺してしまった・・・。
