Hunks prevail

Any movie that has both Ewan "Obi-Wan" McGregor and Hugh "Wolverine" Jackman - two guys who possess looks that could turn straight men gay - flaunting their hunk appeal deserves the utmost respect of viewers. That's why this editor chooses to overlook the faults and sing the praises of the erotic thriller Deception, even if it does have gaping plot holes the size of moon craters. A flick that has one of these delectable men in the lead can get away with many mistakes. If it has both of them starring opposite each other, it instantly earns critic-proof status! Ewan, ever the cinematic chameleon, effortlessly slips into his role of Jonathan, a reserved and repressed audit manager who craves order and symmetry. His boring life and lack of love is established right at the beginning of the movie. He soon meets Hugh's lawyer character, Wyatt, who is this relaxed, charismatic man, radiating confidence with every cell of his body, and he is of course popular with the babes - just the opposite of Jonathan (Though with the looks of yummy Ewan, that's implausibility #1!). They instantly strike up a friendship, and Jonathan is obviously drawn to Wyatt's wanton lifestyle, which seems nothing more than fantasies for him. That is, until he accidentally takes Wyatt's cell phone, which becomes his ticket to a wild world of free, anonymous, no-strings-attached sex with strangers, available merely with a call asking "are you free tonight?" The first two women Jonathan encounters (Natasha "Species" Henstridge and Charlotte "Basic Instinct 2" Rampling respectively) initiate him into the rules of this underground sex club known as "the List', and these rules include: no names, no rough stuff. Jonathan later learns that many of his new mates are high-positioned people in Wall Street, who come to the List for "intimacy without intricacy". And what about Jonathan? After countless hotel rendezvous and steamy sex scenes, he is amazed to find that the goddess of his (wet) dreams is also on the List! He is serious about starting a relationship with this girl (Michelle Williams of Brokeback Mountain) the traditional way, and after some dating they really hit it off. But when they are about to go all the way, the girl mysteriously vanishes without a trace, and Jonathan becomes the prime suspect for murdering a woman he slept with. Only then (about halfway into the movie) does Jonathan realize there is something about Wyatt...well let’s not go too far into spoiler territory, but if viewers can suspend their disbelief over the incredible plot lines long enough, they will probably find the introduction of an Asian sexpot rewarding. In his heated search for the girl and the truth, Jonathan gets help from a scantily-clad Maggie Q, no doubt the hottest brunette bombshell on earth to many male viewers who are not yet converted by the combined charm of Ewan and Hugh. |
