Desperately Seeking Susan presents a refreshing silver screen treat that not only fans of personals are likely to be fond of.
Susan Seidelman's romantic comedy from the mid-80s teams up Rosanna Arquette and pop icon Madonna. It revolves around the story of bored New Jersey housewife Roberta Glass (Arquette), a devoted reader of personal ads, especially those placed by Susan (Madonna), who uses this method to stay in touch with her lover, Jim (Robert Joy). After Roberta acquires a jacket sold by Susan who forgot her locker key in it, the two girls' lives intermingle in a romantic, hilarious, and hazardous way Served in mainly bright pastel colors, the film owes a lot to its female lead, Arquette, who offers a tour de force performance as charmingly romantic Roberta. Madonna also fits into the role of wild, adventure-seeking Susan, Aidan Quinn delivers a solid performance as helpful friend Dez, and Robert Joy is convincing as Susan's confused lover. As for the other cast members, Mark Blum is perfect as Roberta's "Spa King" husband, Gary, and Laurie Metcalf stands out as his conceited sister, Leslie. With Thomas Newman's (Scent of A Woman, American Beauty) mesmerizing score as background tapestry, the cinema-edited version of Desperately Seeking Susan (an alternate ending is also offered as bonus material on this release) takes the viewers through a feel-good screwball comedy. With a solid female lead and good supporting characters, including Will Patton who tries to make the best out of his role as small-time crook Wayne Nolan, this celluloid tale promises to keep young and old viewers looking for Susan as eagerly as the movie's core characters. |
