Big-budget Bollywood blockbuster Devdas swept the prestigious Filmfare Awards of India, bagging 10 accolades including Best Film, Best Actor for Shahrukh Khan, Best Actress for Aishwarya Rai, and Best Director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. One of the songs in the film, Dola Re Dola, has attained classic status and is regarded as one of the best song-and-dance sequences ever filmed. Devdas's success has certainly gone well beyond India, as it was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the BAFTA and screened out of competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

Based on the classic novella of the same name by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the romance drama musical tells the tragic story of Devdas (Shahrukh Khan), who returns from his study in Britain with an eye to marrying his childhood sweetheart, Paro (Aishwarya Rai). Unfortunately, the class difference between their families creates problems, and Paro is forced to marry an old, rich widower. Devastated, Devdas begins to abandon himself to alcoholism. A courtesan named Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) is enamored with this wasted man, but he is unable to forget the only love of his life. And, with his life flickering out, Devdas is adamant to fulfill his promise to Paro and set off to see her one last time...
