電懋於1960年的力作《母與女》改編自痴人原著，由唐煌導演，秦亦孚編劇。傭人之女丁皓與少爺張揚原是愛侶，可惜身份地位懸殊，被張揚之母王萊無情拆散，柔弱的丁皓誕下一女，含悲而逝。女兒（仍由丁皓飾演）長大後遇上富家子喬宏，兩人互相鍾情，卻遭父母橫加阻撓，幸而這個女兒性格堅強，終打破身份的枷鎖。丁皓今次獨當一面，一人分飾性格迥異的母女兩角，演出可喜。歐陽莎菲亦憑此片榮獲第七屆亞洲影展最佳女配角金禾獎。
One of MP & Gi's major attractions for 1960, Devotion, should be grim enough a lesson for my teenager in love. Little Kitty Ting Hao suffers due to social evils that ruthlessly rob her of the inalienable right to marry Chang Yang, the man she loves. Her incidental misbehaviour with Chang, which leads to the birth of a fatherless baby, does the final nailing of her coffin. Fortunately their daughter (also starred by Kitty Ting Hao) is intelligent and strong enough to be the master of circumstances and fights for her own love. Kitty Ting Hao portrays the mother and the daughter equally well, while Ouyang Sha-fei wins the Golden Harvest Award for the best supporting actress at the 7th Asian Film Festival.

Solid melodrama
| "Devotion" is a good, old-fashioned, tear-jerking melodrama, with fine performances from the entire cast. Oddly enough, Ouyang's Sa Fei stands out in this film for the restraint with which she plays her role, reminiscent of the somewhat similar role played by Anthony Hopkins in "Remains of the Day". Her character is a rather repressed nanny and Ouyang remains true to her repressed character. Her selfless devotion first to her daughter, then to her granddaughter (both played by the always-charming Ding Hao) form the beating heart of this film. Recommended for a general audience. |

A most deserving AWARD Winning performance

Ouyang Sa Fei, after making a splash in the Chinese movies in the 40s became one of the finest character actress in Chinese movies of the 50s through the 70s. Her formidable skill and emotional depth was in great display in this excellent melodrama "Devotion". Fans of Chinese movies are lucky that many of her work are available on discs now such as "Love Eterne" and many others but this "DEVOTION" is special because it was the first time a HK actress being awarded in an international film festival for a supporting performance--a most derserving accolade many will agree. Thank you Madame Ouyang, the CATHAY library of classics certainly shine brighter with you in it ! |
