Out of the Hong Kong directors of the seventies and eighties, few had a more diversified set of works than Shaw Brothers director Hua Shan. His filmography included such films as the first Chinese sci-fi superhero film The Super Inframan, true crime series The Criminals, and the Leslie Cheung-starring martial arts romance drama Little Dragon Maiden. The 1985 kung fu drama Disciples of Shaolin Temple was one of his last films, and he managed to get the most out of the young martial arts actors at his disposal.

To evade an arranged marriage by his parents, rich kid Cheng Yipeng (Fan Dong Yu) bids farewell to his lover Xiaoqin (He Qing) before running away to the Shaolin Temple. There, he and a group of fellow disciples study Shaolin martial arts under the tutelage of Master Hengde. One day, Youxia (Wang Chi, also the action choreographer for the film), a former disciple who was expelled by the Temple years ago, comes back for revenge. When the Abbot refuses to accept his challenge, Youxia turns his grudge to the group of new disciples...

富家子弟程亦鵬(程冬雨飾)為躲避父母策劃的婚姻,遂上少林寺當了一名俗家弟子。師父?德和尚(趙小銳飾)外表冷漠嚴肅,只著各弟子做苦工,並不教武,各人甚感不滿。遊俠(王赤飾)原是少林俗家弟子,因好勇鬥狠,被逐出少林,一怒之下,他遍訪高手,潛心苦學,誓與少林弟子一比高下。然而少林住持屢次拒絕,遊俠心有不甘,轉與幾個俗家弟子為敵。程之師兄弟大水牛(韓海華飾)及老鼠仔(李小舟飾)先後被遊俠毒打至重傷,師父?德終忍無可忍,一方面教授程武功,另一方面與遊俠比武。但決戰時被住持發現,?德被懲罰面壁修行。程為挽救少林弟子的無故受害,決定應戰。經過一年苦練,與遊俠一戰。一場廝殺後,天下武功在少林又得到一次證明。

Cheng runs away from a marriage arranged by his parents to the temple. Then he starts to learn with the monks later on. However, his master Hung Duk only assigns hard work and does not teach them Kung Fu. Cheng and his mates are disappointed. The Rover, a Kung Fu fanatic, puts them to shame. He once a Shaolin student but expelled for misbehavior, goes back to Shaolin to humiliate the monks. Cheng and his mates are beaten by the Rover. Hung Duk eventually starts to teach them Kung Fu but the abbot punishes him for his flight with the Rover. Cheng is incensed. He goes out and pits himself desperately against the Rover…
