Product Information
導演:劉家良
Director: Liu Chia liang
Legendary martial arts director Liu Chia-liang (a.k.a. Lau Kar-leung) strikes gold as he directs the golden robed real life hero Monk Song Te played by his half-brother Liu Chia-hui (a.k. Gordon Liu). Gordon reprises the reprises the role that shot him into superstardom in The 36th Chamber of Shaolin in the unofficial third sequel Disciples of the 36th Chamber. Perusual, Liu's action direction is mind-boggling and never ceases to amaze.

Disciples of the 36th Chamber

I agree with reviewer Kevin. Gordon reprieved his role as Sum Tuc the youngest Shaolin monk to achieve master status (see 36 Chambers of Shaolin). Siao Hu played Fong Sai Yuk (another legendary hero later played by Jet Li in his trilogy by Hsui Hark). In this movie we see how the 3 characters of Hung Hei Koon, Fong Sai Yuk and Sum Tuc later played a part in the revolutionary upheaval of the Manchurian reign. Although all the main characters displayed excellent kung fu feats, I find the Fong Sai Yuk character a little annoying as I don't believe his character could be so reckless and irresponsible. His mother was played by Lee Li Li who puts in a good kung fu demo everytime. Still, one for the kung fu collection. |

farewell Shaw Brothers
|
This is one the last kung fu movie that came out under the Shaw Brothers label. It's fast, direct, classic and authentic when we talk about kung fu moves in this flix. The actors are in top form. The year is 1984, just before the shooting of Jet Li's Martial arts of Shaolin, Lau Kar Leung and the crew is at the top of their art and it shows. |

Comic kung fu gem

"Disciples of the 36th Chamber" tells the familiar story of Fong Sai Yuk training at the Shaolin Temple, then emerging to take on the Manchu rulers. Yes, we've seen this all before ... but not like it is depicted in this wonderful film. I need to clarify a few facts that are not apparent from what is written elsewhere on this page. First, unlike the other Gordon Liu-related Shaolin movies, the tone of this movie is comedic, much like the tone of Jet Li's terrific Fong Sai Yuk movies. Second, Gordon Liu is not really the lead actor in this film; he actually is the secondary lead. The primary lead actor is Hsiao Hou, who serves up a dazzling performance. Third, the emphasis in the martial arts depicted in this film is on spectacular tumbling moves and eye-popping, opera-based athleticism, rather than on brutality. This movie is fun from start to finish. Hsiao Hou provides a convincing Fong Sai Yuk, Gordon Liu is his usual masterful self, and the actress who plays Fong's mother is just as wonderful here as Josephine Siao is in the same role in Jet Li's movies. Very, very highly recommended for a general audience. |
