YesAsia Editorial Description

Tinkering around with a ham radio one night, college student So Eun (Kim Ha Neul) connects with In (Yoo Ji Tae), who coincidentally goes to the same university as her. The two decide to meet up on campus, but when they are unable to find each other, they realize that they are actually living in different time periods - So Eun in 1979 and In in 2000. Able to communicate with each other by some blip of time, the two develop a close bond, confiding their insecurities and relationship problems. As they learn more about each other, however, So Eun and In realize that, though separated by time, their lives are more closely intertwined than they had imagined.

Directed by Kim Jeong Kwon and written by Jang Jin, Ditto was released in 2000, four months before the similarly themed sci-fi romance Il Mare. A box office hit at the time, this quietly endearing film sees subtle, effective performances from leads Kim Ha Neul (My Tutor Friend) and Yoo Ji Tae (Old Boy), not to mention supporting actors Ha Ji Won and Park Yong Woo. More than a romance, Ditto serves as a telling profile of the lives and experiences of young people from two very different generations. Kim Ha Neul's So Eun lives in a politically tumultuous time, backdropped by the democracy movement which was born in the nation's campuses. Yoo Ji Tae's self-centered In is the spoiled child of a modern, democratized, internet-connected Korea. In letting the past and present cross over, the film also becomes a bittersweet memoir of the myriad of changes over the last two decades, a coming-of-age testament for the protagonists and the Korea they call home.

"Ditto" is an uneven, but ultimately compelling movie about communications between a college girl in 1979 and a college boy in 2000.

For the first 60 minutes of the film, we see a fairly superficial story about youthful yearning. The story really becomes a moving emotional experience when the college girl So Eun, nicely played by Kim Ha Neul, learns of her connection with the college boy In, played by Yoo Ji Tae, and instantly understands how that connection will shape her future.

The second half of the movie makes for very compelling viewing as we see Kim Ha Neul come to grips with her fate. Both Miss Kim and the young actress playing the girl who longs to be In's girlfriend deliver fine performances.

Your humble servant can recommend "Ditto" for a general audience.

good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
this movie is really good because the story is pretty interesting, kim haneul and yoo jitae do a good job acting, especially in scenes where they listen to eachother through the radio. the soundtrack is great too because they used a lot of Bach. overall definitely worth seeing.

slow but enjoyable Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
All the main casts delivered their parts beautifully. The story is fascinating and KHN looks so delicate. You'll like it even if you think it is illogical.

After watching this movie.. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
My eye caught this movie after I read the visual novel, A Midsummer Day's Resonance, which has a plot that was near a mirror-image of Ditto.

I love A Midsummer Day's Resonance. Ditto was even better.

I had already watched "My Tutor Friend" and had a liking to Kim Ha Neul so I was definitely ready to watch Ditto. Kim Ha Neul's performance was amazing. She is a played (and looked!) the role of a late 1970's college student so well.

If you're into sad love stories, definately watch Ditto. Ditto is pretty similar to the American classic, "Somewhere in Time", so if you like that movie, I reccommend Ditto for you.
