Two movies in one
|
"Don't Look Back ... Or You'll Be Sorry" is like two different movies that have been stuck together. The first half of the film is a berserk family comedy. Pregnant Lisa (Anita Yuen), her hubby Tung Chi-hwa (Dayo Wong), and their child are a normal happy family who live together in a home that Lisa co-owns with her mother Marianne (Deanie Ip), who lives overseas. (Yes, the name Tung Chi-hwa is intended as a joke, as Hong Kong's chief executive at the time this movie was made was Tung Chee-hwa.) Family relations begin to unravel when (a) Lisa begins to suspect (incorrectly) that Chi-hwa may be fooling around with a curvaceous co-worker (Yeung Ka Man) and (b) Marianne returns to live with the family. Putting Marianne and Chi-hwa under the same roof produces a highly volatile mixture, with temperatures and voices rising until it is all-out emotional warfare between the two. All of these hijinks are played as wild comedy. But at the movie's midway point, everything changes. After one particularly loud squabble between Chi-hwa and Marianne, Marianne storms out of the house only to be hit by a truck. After taking a brief detour into the afterlife, Marianne finds herself in the hospital recovering from her injuries. And she finds herself intermittently haunted by a variety of ghosts. Ultimately, one of those ghosts, with very bad intentions, takes possession of Lisa. Marianne then undertakes to appease the ghost and to free her Lisa from the ghost's grip. Comedy is almost entirely absent from this latter half of the movie, which is handled has a fairly violent horror film. Both halves of the movie are quite entertaining, but the odd shift in tone makes it all seem a bit jerryrigged. "Don't Look Back" belongs to Deanie Ip; she chews up the scenery and overwhelms everyone else with her crazy energy. Dayo Wong tries to keep up for a while, but just doesn't have the acting chops to manage it. Anita Yuen manages well her transition from pouty housewife to possessed madwoman. You won't be sorry if you look back at "Don't Look Back". |
