Based on a play by Maxim Gorky, also entitled Lower Depths, Kurosawa shifts the stage from Russia to Japan's Edo period in this comedic drama. True to the title, the story takes place in a hole - a bleak tenement buried in a waste-filled landscape. The characters lives' themselves represent the bottom of a pit as well, as all of them have, one way or another, hit bottom. It is in this setting that the characters wage their fight against the miseries of life, living out their hopes and dreams with a vigor and life-force that remains strong despite their surroundings.
In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Scene chapters are set according to the scene divisions appearing on Kurosawa's screenplays. The keepcase is housed in a handsome box. This edition also contains a booklet including a poster gallery and other promotional materials for the film. Special features include a making-of documentary and trailer(s).
