Han Suk Kyu and Ko So Young return to the silver screen in the riveting spy thriller Double Agent! Han Suk Kyu portrays Lim Byung Ho, a North Korean agent stationed in East Germany who seemingly betrays his own department in order to defect to the South Korean party. After a narrow escape through Checkpoint Charlie, Byung Ho is picked up by South Korean agents that appear to welcome his decision to flee from the North Korean regime. However, he soon finds out that they were merely faking and want to beat the truth out of him as he is taken to Seoul's Namsan Mountain that is known for its brutal investigation methods with electric wires and water. Byung Ho is finally set free only to reveal that he works for North Korea after all and continues his spying mission during which he has to team up with Yoon Soo Mi (Ko So Young). Using a romantic affair as cover for their espionage, the two isolated individuals begin to form real affection for each other.

　　North Korean diplomat Lim Byun-ho escapes to the Western side of Berlin during the Cold War to pay allegiance. He is tortured to see if he is actually a double agent sent to spy on them. It turns out he is just that, but he is released and employed as an official of security bureau. The spy’s life never gets less complicated or dangerous. Even in risk of being exposed, Lim has to help his comrades in the North that puts him in greater danger of being exposed. As the central character, Han Suk Kyu does a tremendous job of portraying his character as a real person.

After a three-year respite, beloved Korean actor Han Suk-kyu finally made his return to the film business with his latest film Double Agent (aka: Comrade), which is directed by new director Kim Hyun-jung. What is worth to mention is that Han is also the co-producer of this film. Similar to Han, co-star Ko So-young has not been in any movie for quite a while too. The teaming up of this couple has made this movie one of the most anticipated one in 2003.

Carrying some similarities of Shiri, this film features an intricate spy tale intertwined with a pathetic love plot. Byung-ho (Han Suk-kyu) is a North Korean agent who has chosen to defect to South Korea. He gains the trust from the South Korean government and becomes an agent of the intelligence bureau short after his defection. But it turns out that he was actually ordered by his superior in North Korea to defect, with a mission to revolutionize South Korea. Soo-mi (Ko So-young), another espionage disguised as a disc jockey, is Byung-ho's new partner in South Korea. The two of them begin to infiltrate the intelligence bureau, an unexpected love affair gradually ignites during their contacts... Suspense is not an easy genre to handle. The filmmakers have to be extremely careful to avoid plot holes and irrationality. In this regard, director Kim Hyun-jung's effort is notable. Although the story still suffers from some minor incongruity here and there, and the depiction of the North and South Korean agents is also a little bit too harsh, the overall narrative is still very well presented. Viewers will not be baffled by the complicated plot development. Those who have no prior knowledge about the conflict between North and South Korea should also have no problem comprehending the story.

Compared to the enjoyable story of suspense, the relationship of the characters are somewhat less impressive. By that I mean the love affairs between Byung-ho and Soo-mi. Throughout the film, there are very few scenes that actually tell the audience they are falling for each other. In fact, they never seem to interact closely. So when they finally get together at the end, it is very hard for the viewers to feel for their intimate relationship. The two of them simply fail to produce any chemistry. Comparatively speaking, the two sub-plots, that is, the friendship between Byung-ho and his superior Baek (Chun Ho-jin) as well as the "father and daughter" attachment between Soo-mi and the old agent, are actually much more captivating. From enemy to friend, and then from colleague to enemy again, Byung-ho and Baek's interactions are full of intimidating dramatic twist.

Han Suk-kyu's portrayal as the deceitful agent is satisfactory. But it doesn't really provide any present surprise for the viewers, as he has played the role of a government agent in Shiri before. Han doesn't really bring in any new elements to his characters, but merely retains his usual style with his trademark stony face. Ko So-young as the perplexed-mind agent is also qualified. However, as I have said above, this character is not too well developed. The biggest pity is that the script fails to give her too many opportunities to fall in love with Byung-ho. So don't expect a passionate Ko So-young as you might have seen in A Day or Love Wind Love Song.

Apparently, the director was setting his ambition a little bit high. There were a lot he wanted to do, but with various reasons including his lack of experience, the overall result turned out to be not as breathtaking as expected. Nevertheless, I wouldn't call it a failure. In short, Double Agent is still a very entertaining piece of work. Perhaps it is not a big surprise, yet it certainly won't disappoint you either.

The is good. Actually from the start to almost finish, you will never guess which side he is really from. The ending is sad though but the story is really nice.

I love the story and the plot. It is very interesting indeed a job well done. A movie you should not miss. It's heartbreaking though co he died in the end but it's worth your valuable time. So grab a copy.

This is just a personal opinion, but I find that this film is actually better than Shiri. Of course, Shiri is not bad,but very enjoyable. But I feel there were some flaws in that film, and it was a little bit over evaluated because of its blockbuster-like style. But this film Double Agent is better in terms of storyline and the making was good I feel. The director made the flow of the film very natural, and both the actor and the actress played well in this film. The story gives some thoughts to anyone who is interested in history of Cold War. In this regard, this film is more serious than Shiri, but less known whil better made---I think.

Agent's Mission Failed... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Let's just say this was supposed to be such a blockbuster film in the land of S. Korea. However it turn out just the opposed. Even the film production company openly addmitted they were hoping for the better box office score than it did. High hopes in the lead actor & actress in the names of Han Suk-Kyu & Ko So-Young. It was a bad decision to begin with when you starting your lead actress Ko So-Young to play as a North Korean spy. (for all your Koreans out there you know what I mean) And for all you non-Koreans, simply Ko So-Young does not look like a North Korean nor she can act like one.... She is too hot/pretty to be a North Korean spy agent. Anyway, the story line was quite preditable after 45 mins into the film, lack of sparks in the plot was the main reason it stumbled. It wasn't quite as interesting as I thought it would turn out. The efforts were definitley there however the film has it's own missing peaces. I gave a 6 out of 10 because of the strong cast & it's idea. However, this is not a movie that will be on the top 10 Korean movie of the year for 2003.

I really enjoyed this movie. There is a cold war feel to this movie, and the interactions between Han and Ko are fascinating. I highly recommend this movie.
