YesAsia Editorial Description
Born in Taiwan, 29-year-old Aska Yang joined the Mando-pop music scene in 2007 even though his parents wanted him to look for a more down-to-earth job. Who would have thought that he would shoot to fame after participating in the popular television singing One Million Star? The One Million Star compilations Stars Reunion and Yesterday, Now & Tomorrow have both been huge successes, and now the talented singer's debut album has arrived. The album contains eleven new songs including the titular principal track Dove. It looks like his parents and fans can expect even more surprises from the promising new star.

Professional Review of "Dove (Commemorate Edition) (CD+DVD)"

If we have to count Taiwan's most buzzworthy stars last year, other than usual suspects Jay Chou and Jolin Tsai, the obvious candidate would have to be the Million Star Gang. And out of the Million Star Gang, the most popular would have to be Aska Yang, who withdrew from competition halfway but ended up with the most media and buzz. After going through contract disputes and other problems, Aska Yang recently made the decision to join Warner, and quickly released his 11-track debut album Dove, officially realizing his dream of becoming a singer.
A frequent participant of singing contests since a young age, Aska Yang has both the passion and the talent. Just based on his performance on One Million Star, his outstanding singing talent and vocal technique have already greatly exceeded one's expectations for a newcomer. Aska Yang has undeniably beautiful and distinctive vocals; his singing carries both tension and texture, providing a full sound and bringing out the emotions of a song with such strength and clarity that it truly reaches the listener. As for his new album Dove, Aska Yang's performance does not disappoint. He maintains his distinctive vocals, displaying his vocal strength with ease and nimbleness. He can, however, in putting even more power into his singing, also learn to hold back a bit so as to bring more texture to the melody. His handling of the songs can also be clearer to emphasize his individual style. In terms of melody, lyrics, arrangement, and replay value, the songs in Aska Yang's debut album Dove meet the standard, but don't stand out enough. Overall, Dove is a solid, but not superb release. If this is reflective of the record company's desire to keep the focus on Aska Yang himself, then it is understandable; otherwise, the producers of the album should really have worked harder to write Yang better songs. Title song Dove has a likable melody that goes easy on the ears. The lyrics, which seem to reflect Yang's own thoughts, are both expressive and deliberate; though the writing technique itself is unexceptional, the sentiments contained within the lyrics can be felt by the listener. Written and composed by Mayday's Ashin, "Onion" stands out in both melody and lyrics. Though comparing love to an onion is nothing new, Ashin's subtle, yet emotional pen successfully touches hearts without sounding cloying. "Wind of Happiness" has a comforting musical style, and Yang's performance hits the mark. Matilda Tao's lyrics also nicely complement the song's laidback mood. The Tanya Chua-composed "Yearning for Love" has a touching melody and atmosphere, and Aska Yang's husky interpretation is a pleasant surprise. by Stephen Lee (Translation: Sanwei) |

I like this singer a lot because he has a wonderful voice. I saw him in a singing competition show a while ago from the internet. I was impressed by him and his opponent, Jam Hsiao whose debut CD I've ordered. I think Aska Yang is a fine ballad & r&b singer. For his wonderful vocals which is mostly mid range, I would have given this CD a 10 stars. However, I'm not sure if I like his lower range which has a draw? of the great Louis Armstrong. I think some of the music accompaniments need a lot of improvements and Aska's singing needs refinement or improvement as well. He sounds a little too self-conscious in Track 11. That being said, I still give a lot of credits to Aska's singing. My favorite tracks are: 1,3,5,6,7&10. Track 7 is probably my favorite. It has a Latin flavor. I'm happy to be a supporter of Aska and I wish him continuing success in his career. |
