Dream Lovers (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

The internationally famed actor Chow Yun Fat and the gorgeous beauty Brigitte Lin enact a love that spans two thousand years in the Tony Au movie Dream Lovers. A melancholic romance in ancient China finds its continuation in the contemporary city of Hong Kong. A young man and a young woman, who have never met before, inexplicably dream of each other in exotic ancient costumes every night, without realizing themselves as reincarnated ancient lovers who were mercilessly separated in their previous lives. Apart from the alluring story-telling, this visually astounding film is also accompanied by enchanting music which has won the film the Best Original Film Score award at the 1987 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Chow Yun Fat is a conductor of classical music named Sung, who wants to settle down in Hong Kong with her fiancee (Cher Yeung, winner of Miss Hong Kong 1983). All of a sudden, he becomes possessed by visions of a beautiful lady dancing in ancient costume. Another young woman in Hong Kong dreams of an ancient soldier who looks exactly like Sung... The two are actually reincarnated lovers in the Qin Dynasty (2nd Century B.C.). How should Sung choose between his lover who has waited for him for two millennia and his fiancee whom he has spent the last eight years with?

Professional Review of "Dream Lovers (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version)"

October 14, 2009

This professional review refers to Dream Lovers (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version)
Drenched in melancholy and regret, Dream Lovers is the kind of movie that drives the well-balanced amongst us into a deep depression.Chow Yun-fat plays a conductor of classical music who returns to Hong Kong as the toast of the town after spending years overseas with his fiance. The two buy an apartment and settle in as young people with a future. Before they can even move in the furniture, Chow Yun-fat becomes possessed by visions and dreams of Brigitte Lin (who isn't?) finding himself hypnotically drawn to the exhibition of terra cotta warriors recently excavated from the Qin Emperor's grave. His fiance can only stand by and wonder what's up.

What's up? Reincarnation. Chow and Brigitte are reincarnated Qin Dynasty lovers who were brutally, lethally, separated thousands of years in the past. They're back together again and lord help any mortal who gets in their way. The damage in this movie starts psychic, and quickly becomes physical as wrists are slashed and minds are broken by the black past boiling up into the present.

With an explicit eye for sexual conduct and a feel for modern relationships only slightly less painful than an autopsy, director Tony Au maps out the destruction these two do without flinching. Watching mortal concerns slough off in the face of bloody history is as painful as a car wreck, and Chow Yun-fat and Brigitte Lin underplay the high drama, both in the present day and in the flashbacks to their previous lives, making what they do that much more painful.

The Qin Dynasty was the first to unify China, and compared to their hard-edged world us modern folk are a bunch of marshmallows. Watching this movie is like watching a boulder roll over a dozen eggs, leaving a smeary mess behind. The boulder is the Chinese past, the eggs? Hong Kong.

Melancholy at its best Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This was the first film I saw that utilized the Qin dynasty so it was very different to me & the music mystically haunting at the same time. I know the idea of reincarnated lovers is nothing new in the Asian sense but I felt touched by this particular portrayal of tragic lovers & the subtle differences in their love for each other that defined how/why their story was melancholic. Not a feel good movie if you're looking for a stay-at-home rental date movie; but if you're the slightly darker, brooding type, be my guest, you'll probably appreciate this one. (the fashion of the modern time is the only thing that dates itself)
