what on earth?

Just read the synopsis on the cover and there is no need to see the film because it was not a bit as interesting unless of course you want to see Leon. Watching it is a joke..just like a bunch of kids playing games. Leon looks great but that is IT. The Cantonese was dubbed but not sure if Leon spoke Korean himself. If he did, his Korean is fairly good. |

My first impression of this movie was that it had the potential for a great exhibition of style, action & depth in story. It had the stoic, class coolness of Japanese samurai attitude with Hong Kong/Chinese flashy action, fight choreography but simply fell short. There were some characters that you wanted to bond a little more with but spanning the spectrum of time sure gave some depth to the love story & relationships. The story then continued a touch longer after everything seemed to or could have been resolved. The continuous use of flashbacks complicated the flow & left you more confused than necessary but it was functional in the whole delivery of the story. Worth viewing. (was one of the first Korean movies I saw & was impressed) |

Well... I've finally stumbled upon a fairly bad Korean movie. Should have expected it though as three in a row (probability of watching three good Korean movies in a row) was asking for a bit too much. Dream of a Warrior has got this really weird storyline which is also a little confusing so you have to watch certain sections a few times to try and understand it. The problem here is that it wasnt interesting enough, therefore I really just couldnt be bothered. It started off ok with the chase and action scene but then, it falls into a heap of mess and never seemed to recover. Then there are flash backs (past life thingy), strange dreams and a time machine thingy explanation where Leon Lai goes to save some girl/princess/daughter of the dude who invented that machine by the way, its not the girl on the cover of the DVD (Lee Na Young) either! Why you might ask, I dont know. Come to think about it, I was expecting the movie to be about Lai and Na Young (these 2 were on the cover werent they? The princess was on the back) but she plays a relatively small role in the movie (cant say much without spoiling it). And whenever there is a scene with Lai and the princess, we get this really annoying, corny hero music (really irritating to the point of driving you insane!). Ok enough complaints. On the bright side, its not the worst movie Ive seen (if you wish, check out my other reviews) and there are a few sections that are a little interesting but thats about it. In summary, there is little to recommend here unless youre a Sci-fi fanatic (I think which I am not so only guessing here) or youre interested or analyzing a bad movies as part of an assignment or something along those same lines. |

Complicated love story

I felt that Dream of a Warrior was an amazing blend of love, destiny, and martial arts/sci-fi cinematics. Not only was the rivalry between Shanil and Dean over the beautiful Princess Rose understandable, but the intricatly interwoven subelements that feed into their world was clearly evident as well. The film itself sheds a great deal of light on the values of caste, honor, and duty within certain cultures. To compliment this the relationship between Dean's friend Martin and Shosho in the past-life and theri respective relationships in the present where it is they who can never be together displays clearly that though many people are unaware of it, we as a people are still very much bound to our respective classes and life roles. The film was very well done, however it seemed that in a sense certain parts were not as well developed as others. An example of this would be the shift in Martin's character from not being interested in teh "wild" Shosho to his apparent deep affection towards her when they die together. Another shortcoming to me as an American viewer was the endless amount of flashbacks. It seemed to be done a bit much, but it may also be that my experience of movies as an American viewer is not cultured enough to appreciate the way it is done elsewhere. Reguardless, the flashbacks did assist in the accentuation of the relationships and emotions between the characters. The character whom I most related to in this film was Shanil, the primary antagonist of the film. I found his character understandable, and his motivation to be well intended in his heart. Overall I found this to be a generally enjoyable movie. Great for a night with good, intellectual friends, though perhaps not as well appreciated by less philosophical audiences. |

It's ok

this was an alright movie but the costume was terrible for most ppl like shanil and the general, and not to mention the leather jacket leon lai wore at the end. The romantic situation between deans good friend and shosho was much more interesting than dean and princess rose's. |
