줄거리:
1965년, 광산촌에서 자란 ‘완’은 15세 때 타이페이로 떠나 인쇄공장에서 일을 시작한다. 그리고 고향 여자친구인 ‘후엔’도 다음해에 타이페이로 온다. 그들은 가족을 부양하고 학비를 마련하기 위해 힘겨운 생활을 꾸려가지만 행복을 잃지 않으려 애쓴다. 완과 친구들은 하나 둘씩 입영 영장을 받게 된다. 결국 완도 자신의 일을 그만두고 입대하게 된다. 완과 후엔은 결혼까지 약속한 사이지만 제대를 앞두고 한동안 후엔의 편지는 끊긴다. 완이 군복무를 마치고 돌아왔을 때 후엔은 이미 우체부로 일하던 다른 남자와 결혼을 한 상태였다.

프로덕션 노트:
후 샤오시엔의 청춘 4부작(<펑꾸이에서 온 소년>, <동동의 여름방학>, <동년왕사>, <연연풍진>) 중 마지막 작품. <동년왕사>가 감독의 소년 시절을 그린 영화라면, 이 작품은 시나리오를 쓴 오염진의 청소년 시절 이야기이다. 86년 낭트영화제 최우수 촬영상 및 편집상 수상.
이원은 15세에 타이뻬이로 와서 일을 하고 죽마고우인 아운도 다음해에 타이뻬이로 온다. 두 사람은 결혼까지 약속한 사이지만, 아원이 군복무를 마치고 돌아왔을 때, 아운은 이미 다른 남자와 결혼을 한 상태였다.
타이페이의 도시 생활에 대한 묘사로 가득한 이 영화는, 현대 대만이 산업사회로의 이행 해 가는 과정을 필연적으로 드러내고 있다. 인간의 심연을 자극하는 슬픈 작품으로, 혹자는 이 영화를 두고 1980년대 최고의 영화 10편 안에 꼽기도 한다. 후효현 스스로 "자기 자신의 시대와 작별하고, 이제부터 대만의 역사를 다루기 위해 아버지의 시대에로 들어가겠다"라고 선언하였다. 그래서인지 이 영화는 노스탤지어의 분위기가 가장 짙게 담겨져 있으며, 특히 열차가 지나가는 첫 번째 장면은 이후 열차가 나오는 모든 아시아 영화들의 전형이 되었다. 후 샤오시엔의 영화 중 가장 시적인 작품.
