Perhaps most known recently for the mega-budget The Blue Wolf: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea, Sawai Shinichiro first rose to prominence through his works with film studio Kadokawa, including Tragedy of W and Early Spring Story. Based on an Akagawa Jiro novel, his 1985 film Early Spring Story (a.k.a. Soushun Monogatari) followed a hesitant romance between a student and a middle-aged man. The film's delicate and observant direction won Sawai a Best Director trophy at the Japan Academy Awards. Early Spring Story starred the top actress of the day Harada Tomoyo (The Youth of Kamiya Etsuko) and a host of veteran stars like Tanaka Kuni, Sendo Nobuko, and Hayashi Ryuzo. The film also features original music by renowned composer Hisaishi Joe.
A member of her school's photography club, 17-year-old Hitomi (Harada Tomoyo) goes to Kamakura in the spring to take pictures of the area's scenery. There she meets the middle-aged Okawa (Hayashi Ryuzo), who invites her to a dinner party, making Hitomi feel like an adult for the first time. Days later, Hitomi discovers a picture of Okawa amongst her deceased mother's belongings and realizes that he was her mother's former lover. On the verge of womanhood, Hitomo embarks on a confused relationship with Okawa. Is it love, or is she simply tracing the footsteps of her mother?

A May-December romance

"Early Spring Story" tells of a 17 year old girl who, in order to gain experience, decides to emulate a high school friend by dating an adult. She encounters a 42 year old business executive and tries everything she can think of to make him fall in love with her. Harada Tomoyo is convincing as the petulant kid with a crush who won't take "no" for an answer. Coincidentally, the girl stumbles across an old photo of her deceased mother and sees that her mother formerly dated the same man. She learns that he dumped her mother in order to pursue his career in America. This knowledge leads to a complex brew of emotions that ends up with her throwing herself at the middle-aged man in a hotel room. Will he take advantage of the situation? Will true love blossom between the two? "Early Spring Story" is a watchable and reasonably well-made (if low budget) film. However, a movie about romance between a 42 year old man and a high school kid ultimately seems a bit creepy. |
