East Asia Capital Artists Concert Karaoke (3DVD)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Capital Artists was one of the most influential record labels in Hong Kong from the 1970s to 1990s, having produced countless classic songs and given birth to some of the biggest pop stars we grew up listening to. In 2008, the company was merged with East Asia Music, and in December, two sold-out concerts were held with a star-studded ensemble of former Capital Artists singers present to bring back the memories of the golden era of Hong Kong pop music.

Famous Capital Artists alumni like Sammi Cheng, Andy Hui, Miriam Yeung, Denise Ho, and Andy Lau (who enjoyed a brief stint at the label) perform their own past hits as well as those of other Capital Artists singers, especially the late pop legends Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Roman Tam. Also paying tribute to Capital Artists are guest singers Richie Ren, Wilfred Lau, Ivana Wong, Chet Lam, Pong Nan, Bosco Wong, and groups at17, Fama, and 24Herbs. The 3-hour concert is captured in its entirety on this triple-DVD release, which also includes a making-of featurette on the bonus track.

A rambling commentary
Amidst loud, rousing music, 3 figures rise up slowly into view in the middle of the stage. Turns out it's Miriam Yeung, Andy Hui, and Denise Ho... It's M.A.D.! The trio "Leaps Over the Stage" to begin the party celebrating the imminent revival of Capital Artists under East Asia. What follows is the summer favorite "Red Hot Action La La La" when everyone comes out. Bosco Wong looks rad! But why no Sammi Cheng? Saving the ace for last, maybe?

Everyone then retreats backstage, except Denise, who starts the solo sessions with a unique presence that holds your attention - especially on her mentor's unforgettable "Break Open the Iceberg" which sends the audience into a frenzy. Fellow Anita Mui protege Andy returns onto the stage, making moves on Denise, and the stage literally explodes with sexiness. Denise leaves the stage after the night's first climax, and Andy has the stage all to his own now. He says he's going to give us a "Super-super-super-...-medley". Bring it on! He performs his most popular Capital Artists ballads including his signature love song "Only You Are Not Replaceable".

Now it's Miriam. Never particularly fond of her, but no one can deny that she's radiating charm tonight. Her rendition of Anita's "Just Like This" is pretty awesome. Terence Yin, the lead singer of Alive, sings Leslie Cheung and Elisa Chan's "Lest We Won't Meet Again" with Miriam. Then they make way for Charles Ying who partners with Jill Vidal. (Wow, what a sweetie with a great voice!) The duo offers another irresistible Leslie and Elisa duet, "Fall in Love". Then another pair, Wilfred Lau and Ivana Wong, bring something of their own to the Leslie and Anita classic "Destiny". A solo Wilfred performs "God, Please Let Me Sleep", his first plug since joining East Asia. Many think his voice resemble Eason Chan's, and sure enough he covers "Always Be With Me", one of the best Eason songs from when he was at Capital Artists. Jill is back for another go; wouldn't it be a big waste of talent if she never performs again?

24Herbs, FAMA, and the lovely Charmaine Fong come out with their toe-tapping hip-hop trilogy, and the audience loves it. Ivana sings while playing the piano - by the way, her hair is tremendous - and she dances, too! Next we have Bosco, Wilfred, and Pong Nan with us as the new Tiger Cubs, and these guys do look the part. Then it's another highlight of the night - Chet Lam and at17. Nothing beats this genius when he's armed with a guitar - except when he's armed with a guitar and a pair of angels! Their version of Sandy Lam's "The World is Large" is simply impeccable. Special guest Richie Jen joins them on stage, jokes about what to call their band, and contributes with a cover of Tony Leung's "In the Hazy Rainy Night". Given Capital Artists' relations with TVB, songs from children shows are inevitable. The kiddie medley begins with FAMA's Ultraman theme, followed by Charmaine and Cherry Wong's "Creamy Mami" , "Captain Tsubasa" Wilfred with a soccer taped on his foot, Ivana as "Queen Millennia", Chet's "430 Space Shuttle", at17 and Jill on "Doraemon", Charles and Pong's "Gold Lightan", and the Denise double "Maruko-chan" and "Dr. Slump". After this trip down our childhood memory lane, we're allowed some breathing room, as Miriam comes back for her solo turn. She's obviously very popular, getting the warmest reception thus far.

Sammi finally gets her time to shine. Doesn't she look like a doll? Something about her feels slightly off when she performs "Hot Love Island"; fortunately she's back to her best form on "Chotto Hang On" and "Ding Dong". Sammi remembers Anita with "Woman's Heart", which sounds great! But that's beside the point, because she then belts out "Only You Are Not Replaceable", getting a huge reaction out of the audience. Midway through the song - surprise, surprise - Andy is shown harmonizing offstage. At the end, the camera catches them giving each other knowing smiles - isn't that priceless?

Towards the end of the show, please welcome the other Andy, Andy Lau! He speaks about how he released only one record with Capital Artists, selling a meager 486 copies. Andy may not have a deep connection to the label, but no one can argue that he is THE icing on the cake for the night. He's really a master of showmanship, from his singing and dancing to how he interacts with the audience (he even brings his "sons" to entertain the guests). His high-energy medley is quite nice. So is his Leslie cover - until the part when he begins to sing in Leslie's voice which is really not necessary.

After Andy leaves, the core group of M.A.D.S. are back, giving a medley of classic numbers from late legends Anita, Leslie, and Roman Tam. The entire cast gathers again for the grand finale to sing the New Talents number "The Waves Rinse the Sands" in chorus and conclude this nostalgic trip - one that we don't want to return from.
