A groundbreaking Chinese film from director Zhang Yuan (Green Tea), East Palace West Palace depicts an attraction between a gay man and his policeman captor in modern Communist China. Gay writer A-Lan (Si Han) attracts the attention of a young policeman (Hu Jun of Lan Yu) while cruising a public park, and is detained and interrogated for most of the evening. His life story reveals the repressive attitudes of the Chinese government and the intolerance present in all levels of society. But the self-assured young man manages to unnerve and even affect his conflicted, insecure tormentor, leading to attraction and even seduction.
East Palace West Palace was screened at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival after its director Zhang Yuan was placed under house arrest and his passport confiscated. An involving, atmospheric portrait of a society in transition, East Palace West Palace manages to transcend its "gay film" label to present a universal film about tolerance and the right to identity. Co-starring Vicki Zhao Wei, who would go on to star in director Zhang Yuan's Green Tea, East Palace West Palace is a stunning step forward for the international reputation of modern Chinese Cinema.

Below Average Movie

The only reason for watching this movie is Hu Jun. His portrayal as a cop is excellent. See his face expression, his gesture or body languange, his tone of voice, etc... he manages them very well. But the other things about this movie, I cannot recommend. Also Vicky Zhao appears very briefly, she almost has nothing to do with the story. |

Excellent Masterpiece!

I can only agree with "Rate with your head". Reviews made by those Vickie Chao fans should have never been allowed to be printed here as they have nothing to do with the movie. This movie is a visual and artistic masterpiece and the acting by Hu Jun, one of my favourite chinese actors, is just marvellous. One of the best chinese films I know. Excellent, brave and stunning! |

A VERY BEAUTIFUL MOVIE

For a Chinese movie I think it is a very daring one...Excellent interpretation...No need to be gay to appreciate it! You just have to be open minded, ready to be moved by people who are different from you! After having seen it, you won't forget it before long! |

Be aware: shallow and narrow-minded reviews

Those three reviews that rate this movie 0 stars only because their "idol" appears briefly in the movie betray nothing but those reviewers' stupidity. The quality of a movie is not rated by how many superstars are in it. Neither, an actor or actress's performance is measured by how much time he/she shares on the screen. Those shallow and narrow-minded reviews do not accurately reflect the quality of the plot and the excellent performance of the actors. Those who rally know how to appreciate a quality film with a critial mind need not waste time to consider those previous paltry reviews. |

hellow~~ wow .. i'm suprised that you asked :] first ... if you really wanna know then buy it.. but i think it's a waste of money :[ .... me too i'm vicki's biggest fans :[ and .....it turns out that this movie .... vicki just played like 3 minutes in that movie ... she acts as that gay guy's first girl friend before he really found out that he was gay.... at first he didn't know ... then the rest of the movies was about that guy having sex with other guys ... and god it was really nasty~~~~~~~~~ ewww... hm... and how that gay guy was arrested.... and questioned by police bcuz he was gay..... there was a town for gay people to meet or something .... it's an old movie i think... and it's really nasty~~ ... i am not trying to say that gay guys are nasty .. and i don't have a problem with gay people at all .. actually i do have gay friends too .. but .... i just think that this movie went a little too far .. :[ hm.. |
