Multi-talented Mathias Woo (who co-wrote the screenplay for the Louis Koo movie Happy Birthday) and Edward Lam have earned their reputation in making high art more accessible to the general audience by mixing talk shows, stand-up comedies, musicals, and dramas into innovative stage performances. Their Eat, Money, Man, Woman and The Importance of Being Vulgar in 2002 explored some characteristics of Hong Kong people that may or may not be virtues. Independent singer/actor Cedric Chan (a member of the music group Gayamyan), drama actor Yeung Wing Tak, plus other veterans in Hong Kong's art scene dug out the implications of Hong Kong people's everyday activities. From commuting by train to chilling out in pubs, from having fun in Karaoke to stirring up office politics, they all demonstrated how absurd life in Hong Kong is capable of! Taiwanese comedian Ismene Ting guest-starred in a segment called Waiting for Godot, commenting on Hong Kong people's mentality to wait for windfall treasures. This entertaining and inspiring show is now recorded on DVD for any one interested in Hong Kong culture to revisit.

《搵食男女》的名字：《EAT, MONEY, MAN, WOMAN AND THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING VULGAR》中的EAT(食)、MONEY(金錢)、AND VULGAR(粗俗、下流)，正好反映香港人的精神特徵，就是拜金、短視、投機、蠱惑、虛偽，還有犬儒、認命、消極、迷信。

劇中笑料直接抄襲或改編自香港現實生活的人與事，為求達到快、真、激三大效果，林奕華要求演員隨身攜帶錄音機、攝錄機、攝影機，廿四小時於全港各大商場、卡拉OK、健身室、大學、茶餐廳、教員室、大排檔、網吧、酒店大堂、地鐵車廂及月台、辦公室、火車、巴士、渡輪、圖書館、出入境要塞等地無限監聽攝錄，再以忠於現實的精神將內容原汁原味搬上舞台，從香港人的衣食住行、悲歡離合、甜酸苦辣、生老病死的種種狀態中，挖苦社會荒誕現象，笑人又笑自己！
