Half of a good movie

The first half of "Edo Porn" is an engrossing depiction of the great Hokusai's years as a self-doubting and unsuccessful artist. As played by Ogata Ken, Hokusai is depicted as a self-involved, pretentious leech, surviving on hand-outs from his father (who has disowned him) and a friend. Highlights of the first half include Tanako Yuko's portrayal of Hokusai's daughter and Hokusai's staging of gimmicky public artistic events to create a name for himself. Tanaka Yuko is a joy to behold as the bold, willful (and frequently half-naked) daughter. It is interesting to contrast Miss Tanaka's vivid performance in "Edo Porn" with the shy, repressed character she played the following year in "Tora-San, the Expert". Unfortunately, "Edo Porn" falls apart in the second half, when the story fast forwards to the elderly years of the film's central characters. The actors appear in ridiculous "old person" make-up and engage in absurd, exaggerated depictions of old people. This is awful stuff, like really, really bad community theatre. It is hard to believe an actor like Ogata Ken would permit himself to be embarrassed like this. Here's my recommendation to you: Watch "Edo Porn" until the film shows Hokusai creating his famous scenes of Mt. Fuji. Then turn the movie off. Believe me, you don't want to watch the rest of it. |
