YesAsia Editorial Description
New generation director Xiao Jiang pay homage to Chinese Cinema with her directorial debut Electric Shadows! She has worked extensively as an assistant director for films and also a TV director, and in her first feature-length film Electric Shadows she makes movies itself the center of attention. The film stars Xia Yu, Best Actor winner in Venice International Film Festival (1994), and also the acclaimed actress Jiang Yihong. Movies have become an indispensable part of the lives of the main characters, and also help members of a family to reconcile with their wounded past. Clips of classic Chinese titles from the 1930s to the 80s are interwoven into the film, and amazingly they are inextricably tied to the family in Electric Shadows!

Mao Dabing, an easygoing film buff, works delivering water bottles in Beijing. One day after he accidentally crashes his bike in an alley, he's suddenly brained with a brick by a disturbed young woman, Ling-ling. Arrested by the police, Ling-ling remains silent, but she gives Dabing the key to her apartment, asking him to feed the fish. Her place turns out to be a shrine to the movies, and especially to one star, legendary '30s singer-actress Zhou Xuan. As Dabing reads Ling-ling's private diary, the film flashes back to Ningxia province in the early '70s and the story of Ling-ling's mom, Jiang Xuehua.

A must-see movie!
|
As "Electric Shadows", a bottled-water delivery boy is knocked off his bike by bricks strewn in his path. He inadvertently knocks over a pile of bricks, then is assaulted by a young woman he does not know. The film then unfolds the connections between the delivery boy and the young woman and her reasons for assaulting him. In that mystery lies a wonderful, warm, heartbreaking human drama about families torn asunder ... and about how movies can motivate us and enrich our lives. The story reaches from China's Cultural Revolution to the present and from a dusty Ningxia village to the streets of Beijing. One can quibble about improbable coincidences in the storyline, but the emotional power of this lovingly crafted film sweep all such concerns away. Don't miss this one! |
