Eman Lam Concert for EX (2CD)

Fortunately, Eman takes a mostly humorous approach to the concept of exes in Concert for Ex. Even though the concert was held as promotion for the Ex soundtrack, most of the show's set list comprises of covers of existing songs that happen to fit in with the topic. The songs cover a surprisingly wide range of genres - from Charlie Young's 1994 pop ballad I Won't Cry in Front of You (itself a cover of a Japanese song) to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Eman has always been known for her stellar vocal abilities, but the set list allows her to show her versatility for the first time.

Some of Eman's covers are even superior to the original, including her piano-driven cover of I Won't Cry…, a rock-infused take on Miriam Yeung's hit ballad The Prayer of a Young Girl, and even Veronica Yip's Are All Men The Same. However, the pièce de résistance of the concert is a special medley of popular ex-related ballads, from Michael Learns to Rock's That's Why You Go Away to Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You. The medley is done as a funny exercise, but Eman can't help but let her vocal talent shine through.

The strength of Concert for Ex is that it places equal importance on the concept and the execution alike. Eman does set up a narrative of sorts in the set list, tracing the steps one goes through at the end of a relationship. However, the concert is still enjoyable even without the concept because of the strong song choices, emphasizing familiarity with mostly well-known classics (though Eman does perform songs from the Ex album). While I would not encourage anyone to dwell on the past - especially when it comes to exes - Concert for Ex may be the best possible excuse you can use to spend a couple of hours with your memories. .
