Japan's original kaiju monster returns in Godzilla Resurgence! Written by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Anno Hideaki and co-directed by Anno and special effects veteran Higuchi Shinji (Attack on Titan), the blockbuster film features the largest Godzilla in history that undergoes several stages of evolution onscreen. In reference to the kaiju's film origins, Godzilla Resurgence (a.k.a. Shin Godzilla) takes inspiration from Japan's recent disasters and pressing environmental and geopolitical problems faced by the world today. More than just a thrilling monster movie, the film is also a bitingly wry political satire on government bureaucracy and crisis management. Featuring a sprawling cast with many cameos, Godzilla Resurgence stars Hasegawa Hiroki (Attack on Titan) and Takenouchi Yutaka (Oba: The Last Samurai) as Japanese government operatives, as well as Ishihara Satomi (Attack on Titan) as an American envoy. Godzilla Resurgence swept seven awards at the 40th Japan Academy Prize including Best Picture and Best Director.

On a day like any other, a coast guard boat is suddenly attacked and the bridge over Tokyo Bay collapses. Viral and news videos show an unidentified creature in the bay. The Prime Minister (Osugi Ren) calls in legions of cabinet and military officials, bureaucrats and experts to assess the threat. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yaguchi (Hasegawa Hiroki) sounds the warning but no conclusion can be reached. Instead, the government seeks to defuse the situation by assuring the public that the aquatic creature poses no danger to those on land. However, the giant creature soon makes landfall, wreaking massive destruction as it ploughs through the city, and then returns to sea, all while the unprepared government scrambles for a belated response. Yaguchi is placed in charge of a task force to research the mysterious monster dubbed Godzilla, and evidence indicates that it will keep growing more powerful and destructive. When Godzilla returns, all of Japan could fall.
