Long hailed as the future of Japanese animation, visionary filmmaker Shinkai Makoto delivered Japanese cinema's miracle story of 2016 with Your Name, which topped the box office for nine consecutive weeks on its way to becoming Japan's second biggest film of all time, behind only Miyazaki Hayao's Spirited Away.
