September 12, 2010 2 rare tracks recorded in UKThis compilation is so well remastered that practically every song sounds better than in previous compilations. As an ardent fan, I would like the entire album that Frances recorded in UK on CD. But here, that album is only represented by 2 tracks.......Send In The Clowns & Yesterday When I was Young. But these 2 songs are arguably the best from that album with Frances sounding sublime backed by the Nick Ingman Orchestra. Elsewhere, her Cantonese hits rub shoulders with her English cover versions with a sprinkling of songs in various Asian languages from her famous Discovery album. If you would like to own only 1 Frances Yip CD, this is the one to get. For completists like me, the 2 rare tracks alone are worth the price of this budget-priced double CD.

January 15, 2010 Fabulous DSD Remastering!Even if you have countless Frances Yip compilations like me, you should still get this double CD set. The reason lies in the DSD remastering. Every song sounds better here than in the previous compilation CDs.
There is one rare song never released before on CD and that's the last song on Disc 2.
It's a Malay song that Frances has borrowed from Malaysia. The miracle of Frances's talent is that she can somehow even make a Malay song sound more magnificent in Cantonese. But that's the wonder of Frances's voice. It can be tender and sensitive but many times, it is a magnificent voice - proud and soaring. Her range is wide and she can sing anything you throw at her.
I wish Warner Music will remaster & release her individual EMI albums. With compilations like this one, no matter how good, some tracks remain buried in the vault. We, her fans, would like ALL her albums on CD.

(1)Our Price: US$10.49Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysSeptember 7, 2009 such wonderful memoriesThese 2 CDs contain many memorable songs from long out-of-print and worn-out vinyl. I was afraid the CDs would not sound good but they do as the songs are remastered from the original master tapes.
From Malaysia, we have Sudirman, Sharifah Aini, Jennifer Yen & DJ Dave crooning some of their best English songs. From Singapore, Anita Sarawak is captivating with her soulful voice and Tracy Huang is always a joy to listen to. I bought this CD especially for the Frances Yip songs since Frances is my favourite singer. What a delight to hear Frances's versions of Things, Save Your Kisses For Me, If You Leave Me Now & Rain in sparkling digital clarity. There are also 2 songs from Gracie Riviera which I have not heard in 20 years. Don't miss out......come share these wonderful memories.

Wow! How come I have never heard of this incredible singer before?
Apart from her powerful voice, she sings with so much emotion. She can also communicate with the audience and the rapport is unbelievable. Her showmanship is fantastic.....she can sing, she can dance, she can play the piano and she can move me to tears without my understanding a single word of what is being sung. Her voice is low when necessary and high when it scales the heights. Awesome!

January 4, 2009 what a great sounding CD!Lee Leng Kok is a restoration & remastering genius to make these old recordings on 78s sound so good.
There's absolutely no scratch sounds or distortion and some of the songs are indeed rare.
I look forward to the next release after enjoying this CD which incidentally makes a great gift.
More please maestro.......

February 20, 2008 BRAVO Tsin Ting!Legendary Tsin Ting is at least 75 years old at the last count but you wouldn't know it judging from her superb vocal performance in this concert. There are moments of absolute brilliance sprinkled throughout where she still sounds like she did in the 60s singing for Lin Dai, Betty Loh Ti, Li Ching, Fang Yin and many more Shaw actresses. The concert starts with a great version of "Song Of Tomorrow", the song that she sang for Ivy Ling Po in the 1967 movie of the same name. There is never a dull moment as Tsin Ting embarks on a musical journey through her distinguished past with musical highlights ranging from her first recording in Cantonese (One Day When We Were Young) to the song that she never recorded (Love Without End). For her greatest hit, the ballad from the Lin Dai movie "Blue & Black", Tsin Ting was accompanied on piano by the talented Anthony Lun who managed to craft a new and sensitive arrangement for her. Dressed to kill in 2 superb gowns as well as a beautiful cheongsam, Tsin Ting displayed an undiminished vocal range. A particular highlight for me is the beautiful duet with her guest, 85 year old Wu Ying Ying who still astounds with her perfect delivery. Although I don't understand a word of Cantonese, Tsin Ting's delightful banter with Anthony Lun is warm and heartfelt. For those few moments, Tsin Ting is so relaxed and laughing so hard, it is not hard to picture what the lady is like in real life : warm & sincere. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough. The HD recording is superb in both exceptional picture and sound quality. I know I will be spinning this DVD often.

December 1, 2007 Remastered in JapanTsin Ting's Wing Hang recordings of the 80s are remastered utilising 24 bit technology to commemorate her 50th year in showbiz. The result is an audiophile gold disc of excellent sound displaying remarkable clarity. Despite numerous reissues, this compilation is the one to collect as it offers the best sound of the Wing Hang years. The echo & excessive reverb have been removed and Tsin Ting's voice is now centrestage where it should be. So this CD is indeed worth picking up even if you already have the other reissues. It may be more expensive but it is made in Japan.

March 6, 2007 Very rare Xiao Juan filmThis 1962 Cantonese opera is worth shouting about as it is the only teaming on screen of Yam Kim Fai and Xiao Juan who would achieve superstardom as Ivy Ling Po a year later in 1963. Originally released in the cinemas as The Royal Wedding By Royal Command, this is one of the must-haves of the genre.
Although I don't understand a word of Cantonese and the subtitles are in Mandarin which I don't read, the mere sight of such a cute young Ivy Ling Po is worth the price of the DVD.
To Ivy Ling Po fans everywhere, grab it!

(2)Our Price: US$14.49Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysFebruary 4, 2007 Ivy Ling Po shines in remake! This story is very famous and practically every Chinese knows it. This remake by Shaw studio in 1967 is quintessential viewing because it has so many strengths. There is Ivy Ling Po, the famed male impersonator, who by 1967 had perfected her art of impersonating a male scholar. Then there is Lydia Sum who almost steals the show as the fat maid. Alison Chang Yen lends strong support as the resourceful maid who comes to the rescue of helpless Fang Yin. What can I say about Fang Yin except that she was born to play such roles and she did it again perfectly here. The songs can either make or break a film in the huangmei genre and I must say the songs in this movie are refreshingly different. So take a chance and order this movie. It will delight you. I have deducted half a star for some recycled costumes from The Grand Substitution and West Chamber. Otherwise all is perfect.

February 4, 2007 What a memorable character!Ivy Ling Po, the famed male impersonator in huangmei opera films brings her considerable talents to the wu xia arena and astounds with her portrayal of an unforgettable character. It is not so much the swordplay skills she displays that impresses but the way she imbues her character with confidence and personality. Another feather in your cap Ling Po......Bravo!

January 5, 2007 Good movie, bad printThis movie would have been very enjoyable if not for the scratchy cut print presented here. A cinemascope movie in 1979, it is in fullframe here with the English subtitles falling off the screen every few minutes. Still all this does not hide Alan Tang's charisma. A very young Simon Yam shows promise too.

Golden Live Concert Light Stage Karaoke (DVD)
August 27, 2006 Unforgettable concertI was in the audience for this concert at the HK Coliseum so I can tell that some songs have been cut from this DVD. What remains is a lovely momento of an unforgettable concert by 4 legends of Mandarin pop. I agree that out of the 4 singers, Tsin Ting is the one that stands out with her superb voice control. It was a joy to hear her croon her unforgettable songs from the Shaw Brothers movies. Although Tsui Ping's vocal range has diminished and her voice has changed beyond recognition, she gamely covered her hits and still made them sound very special indeed. Liu Yun sounds exactly as she did 30 years ago and still performs as if this was her first concert. In other words, she was rigid and lacked showmanship. Wu Ying Ying in her 70s sang all her famous hits so well that I was not sure if she was really singing live at all. I have deducted 1 star for some obvious lipsynching not only by her alone.

July 11, 2006 Lily Ho's final movieIn 1974, Lily Ho retired from showbiz after shooting this movie. She looks really beautiful in it but her role as a courtesan is a small one. In fact Lily Ho and Ling Yun are really only guest stars in this exciting movie. Since I bought the DVD for them, I was disappointed with their small roles but the movie is exciting with Chen Kuan Tai, Frankie Wei Hung & Wang Chung shining in their respective roles. The fight choreography is very impressive for 1974.

June 30, 2006 What an exciting movie!Yesasia's free shipping service for orders over US$25 gave me an opportunity to buy this movie which I would otherwise not pick up. I am glad I bought it as it is very wellmade. The plot is good and I found it exciting with good pacing. Chao Hsiung despite being a supporting actor in other films was given an opportunity to be a leading man for 2 movies. This was the first one and even though he acted well, I wondered why Shaws tried to groom him for stardom. To put it plainly, he is not goodlooking enough though he acts well. Li Ching does not fight in this movie but plays a damsel-in-distress. Although she acts well as usual, she is in danger of being eclipsed by supporting actress Chiang Ling who gives an above average performance as the bad girl. However her nude scenes are performed by a body double. I have to comment on the showdown scene at the windmill at the end of the movie. It is one of the most exciting fight scenes ever filmed at Shaw Studio.

Shaw Movies Soundtrack Compilation - Romantic Classics

June 21, 2006 Great To Hear Them AgainThese 3 cds are wonderful since many of these songs from the Shaw movies have not been heard since the 60s. It is good to hear Tsin Ting, Mona Fong, Carrie Ku Mei and Chiang Hung again in all their remastered glory. However track 13 in this particular cd has a tape glitch in the intro and it is particularly distracting since the song is the memorable Chi Mok from Song Of Tomorrow sung to perfection in the movie by Tsin Ting. I have to comment that the remastering in these 3 cds is not as well done as the bunch of cds remastered by Robin Cherry for the Pathe 100 series. In many tracks, I can hear dropouts and the sound is harsh. I hope EMI will once again secure the services of Robin Cherry in UK for subsequent cds to ensure optimum sound.

June 21, 2006 charisma personifiedI thought this was just an okay movie but it exceeded my expectations. Chen Kuan Tai exuded charisma and supreme confidence in the title role. I also thought Ching Li would play her trademark damsel-in-distress role but no, here she is a highclass arrogant socialite who gradually becomes the Ching Li we know when she falls in love with the hero. Although not an awardwinning masterpiece, this movie is very entertaining filled with good performances. Apart from Chen Kuan Tai and Ching Li, Tien Ching & Chu Mu will disgust you with their portrayals of the rascals. Pick this up and I am certain you will enjoy it.

June 11, 2006 Great fighting scenesI am not a kungfu fan since swordplay (wu xia) is all I like. Moreover, the pigtails & costumes of the Qing dynasty are not to my taste. Therefore I approached this movie without any expectations and I was blown away by the high standard of fight choreography. The movie was wellpaced and there was not a dull moment. Ti Lung is very impressive in the title role and it really looks as if he has mastered the art of staff fighting. The training scenes in which Ti Lung guides Wong Yue are very well thought out and entertaining. Ku Feng again makes a formidable villain and someone you love to hate and kill. If I enjoyed this movie so much, imagine how a lover of kungfu movies will find it.

He is vey charming in the title role and the film should have been a bigger hit in the cinemas then. An added attraction of this film is Tina Chin Fei in a rare period fighting role. This is also one of Margaret Hsing Hui's rare period roles and she surprises me with her good acting here. Lu Ping is effective as the chief villain. Since this was shot in Taiwan, the production values are lower than usual and this is chiefly reflected in the costumes and B-grade actors from Taiwan in the supporting cast.

(2)Our Price: US$28.49Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysJune 3, 2006 Best of the bestThere are so many stars and singers in this amazing concert but when Ivy Ling Po appeared, she outshone and outclassed everyone. This Asian Movie Queen who is a famed male impersonator in huangmei movies in the 60s apparently has not lost any of her charisma. Her star quality was in abundance as she sang a duet with Lisa Wang from her signature movie "Liang Shan Po & Chu Ying Tai". After a tremendously warm welcome from the audience while singing her 2nd song "Fang Ying Tai", she broke into her signature song "Jiao Dao" from the 1963 Shaw movie "The Crimson Palm". The audience went wild as these songs are rarely heard for 40+ years. Ivy Ling Po's voice is intact and instantly recognisable after all these years and she demonstrated why she is still adored by her fans despite retiring in 1989. These 3 songs by her alone are worth the price of this DVD.
