YesAsia Editorial Description
Also known as Escape from Huang Shi, The Children of Huangshi opens in 1937 when the Japanese army invades the city of Nanjing and proceeds to carry out a brutal massacre of soldiers and civilians alike (the Rape of Nanking). There to report the situation, British journalist George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) finds his own life on the block when he is captured by the Japanese military. Chinese revolutionary group leader Chen Han Sheng (Chow Yun Fat) rescues Hogg and sends him to the city of Huangshi where he ends up at an orphanage run by Australian nurse Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell). Hogg gradually warms up to Pearson and her charges, but with the war pressing closer and closer, the orphanage is no longer safe. Forced to flee the region, Hogg and Pearson lead 60 children on an epic 700-mile journey northward, battling mountainous terrain and run-ins with the Japanese military.

Firstly I must say that the main reason that I bought this film is that I love Michelle Yeoh, and have done so ever since seeing her in "Royal Warriors" and then "Wing Chun." Sadly, she isn't given much to do in this film, but when she IS on screen she is as stunning as always. The other reason that I bought this title is that I love studying history, and so was quite interested to watch it from an historical standpoint. While the Japanese were brutal in their treatment of the Chinese people, this treatment of these events by the filmmakers is more subdued than I had expected. Still brutal to be sure, but the way the Japanese treated the Chinese was even more horrific in real life. This film was an Australian, Chinese, German, American co-production, and it shows in the final result. This film looks like it cost quite a bit to produced, but it's all up on the screen to behold. Given China's history with Great Britain it was refreshing to see the English and Australian characters protrayed as actual people trying to do the right thing in a bad situation. The ending, which I won't reveal, is very moving. The entire cast is very good, especially Chow Yun Fat. The version that I bought was the VCD from Modern Audio. The picture and sound quality are stunning, with zero digital artifacts visible on my CRT monitor. |
