Johnny's new champions
Let's take a moment to let this sink in: Kis-My-Ft2 is a debuted group.

No matter how popular a Jr. group may be, in the fickle world of Johnny's there's always the chance a group will go the way of 4 Tops and Ya-Ya-Yah, or remain undebuted like MA (or get lost in some half-debuted limbo like Nakayama Yuma and BI Shadow). Kisumai's six-year wait (seven if you go back to first-generation Kis-My-Ft), however, has finally paid off with the debut single Everybody Go. Just like the lyrics in Everybody Go say, Kis-My-Ft2 seized No. 1 (on the Oricon chart). What's more, they scored the third highest debut week sales ever, putting them in vaunted company behind KAT-TUN and Arashi.

Everybody Go isn't the strongest of Johnny's debut singles - we probably won't be singing this one till the end of time like Glass no Shonen or Real Face - but it's plenty infectious and upbeat for drama theme song replay. The first time I heard Everybody Go, I thought it sounded too much like a KAT-TUN and Hey! Say! JUMP! mashup, because of the mix of rock-style verses with a super positive chorus. (I was also disgruntled about the way four of the members were relegated to the background on their debut single.) The song grew on me quickly though with multiple listens. What wraps Everybody Go together are actually the fabulous old-school beats, which sound like something out of a roller disco, very appropriate for Kis-My-Ft2 and their stage performances.

When it comes to beats though, the B-side track S.O.Kiss tops all with its high frequency beats resonating constantly in the backdrop for the entire track. Despite some questionable English lyrics, the dangerous love song delivers a strong, charismatic sound more in line with the harder pop dance style associated with Kis-My-Ft2, and allows them to better display their vocals.

Both S.O.Kiss and the moody, piano-accompanied dance track Kiss For U are composed by Steven Lee, who has written a generous handful of Johnny's songs including Kisumai's Jr-era Hair, Kitayama Hiromitsu's Chikara, and KAT-TUN's No More Pain. Lee is best known for his work with SS501 and recently Kim Hyun Joong's solo album, and one can definitely hear that same dramatic urban pop vibe in S.O.Kiss and Kiss For U. This style of pop with an edge is a good fit for Kis-My-Ft2, making this the rare Johnny's release in which I actually like the B-sides more than the single. For roller skating though, Everybody Go is still the song of choice.
