YesAsia Editorial Description

Rarely can one find a Canto pop album that, apart from offering pure amusement, carries a philosophical taste. But Candy Lo did it. She teams up with famous producer Kubert Leung again and the chemistry between these two gifted musicians results in 12 extraordinary tracks complied in Evolution Theory. Eight out of twelve songs are composed by Candy herself, once again demonstrating her music talents.

The first track of the album "Lucy (3,180,000 BC)" is now widely broadcast in all radio channels in Hong Kong. A popular song amazingly taking on scientific and humanitarian dimensions, "Lucy (3,180,000 BC)" tells an ancient girl's confusion over the complicated human relationships in a modern city. Some other tracks such as "Asura Forest" which Candy only used 10 minutes to complete, and also "Momentary Heaven" and "Goddess Elsewhere", all reflect a philosophy somewhat akin to Buddhist thinking, enriching Candy's Evolution Theory.

Her music comes back, but her vocal is losing her Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
It's indeed cool that she finally got to returning back to her roots, doing certain corky stuffs, which she generally dont tend to constarin herself within anyn jazz, or classical category, yet not just focing herself into a full harsh rock item either...just writing what she wishes to write, n i do think it's really relevant to do so as i do think CD album is not exactly just a CD with tracks of songs which whether u like it or dont like it, but an album is more of a content, just like a movie, or a book, that delivers a story of it's own, n candy always has her talent in music to tell her's. anyway track 3 might b seem a very lame flat melody, but the mood is really nice n u can imagine the scenary of Asura walking in a cold breezy woods off the war scene. it's kinda amusing how this track gets to stick on m ny head n addicted to it after few times listening, even the start off was seem dissapointed at 1st. anyway the most dissapointing thing i see in this album is that somehow Candy loses her roots in her voice, perhaps turning into too many skilled singing K-songs in previous albums. n FYI, candy sings terrible LIVE, but that is in K songs, but she is only good enuf when she sings back using her mellow but captivating vocal since she was back in her old times. too many ren derings of vocals n somehow loses those agressiveness, yet she tried switching to feminine in tracks like Lucy, yet honestly it doesnt works well to her. yes, basically i wish i couldve enjoy this album much bu7t honestly wasnt that much, yet i do indeed enjoy the point that she' turning back into wat she's good in. i might miss a little bit of her K songs too, but i do think if she finds the right K songs to sing n on the right time n suits her, while blending in her album with her own hardcore stuffs, i would pretty sure it would still indeed enjoyable(like MUSE n FANTASY). anyway 7 points given as an encouragement.( i've ask my frend to buy this album for me from HK, hope this earns other viewers sum supports too)

oh well, it's subjective n yet that my subjectiveness in my own perceotion in objectiveness.

gracias

Ambitious, interesting, but flawed Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I agree with yesasia's "official" reviewer that it's encouraging to see Candy move away from the mainstream flavorless stuff that she's been doing recently. Despite the success of "Better to Go Our Separate Ways," that kind of music is really not what she's about, and as she has been finding out, not the kind of music on which she can build a longlasting fanbase. She has returned to her more adventurous roots on this album, although her rock sensibility (which infused my favorite album of hers, "Fantasy") has been subdued to capture the reflective, philosophical, Buddhist-influenced lyrical themes of the tracks. Overall, it's a very laudable effort and is generally well executed. My only criticism is Candy's vocal skills. To be brutally honest, she really is not that good of a singer and I don't think she has what it takes to carry it off. Perhaps this is partly due to the fact that, as is claimed in the liner notes, no processing was done to her vocal tracks. It's an admirable thing to have done (or not done, more accurately); but part of me wishes that the vocals were more "polished." On certain tracks, I cannot tell whether they are deliberately going for an atonal effect or whether Candy was just totally off-key.

no K songs, but still very nice Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Her new album doesn't have any K songs, which I think is a great thing. It shows her unique style and taste. It's very rare to have these kinds of songs to be released in HK these days.

I Have To Agree... Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I have to agree with the reviewer who was disapointed in this release. I was also VERY disapointed. I think that Candi locked herself into a "theme" and as such, had to write material to go along with the idea she'd created. I feel this limited her not only lyrically, but musically as well. I don't typically like albums with a specific "theme"...especially a theme I disgaree with (that being evolution vs Creationism). However, Candi being a great artist, I was willing to take a chance that this CD would be as wonderful as her previous CDs, "theme" aside. Let me break it down as I personally see it: track 1- interestingly unique, I think Candi can get away with one "theme" song that is funky and different. Track 2- her vocals are whispered and can hardly be heard throughout the exceedingling DULL ballad that doesn't really SAY anything vital. Track 3- more whispered vocals and one can barely understand the words over the boring music. Thankfully, this track is blessedly short. It is in danger of putting the listener to sleep...and making them wonder what happened to Candi's voice... Track 4- Candi finally has her strength back in her vocals, but the song relies heavily on tradtional instruments and is stereotypically "Chinese". It is not enjoyable at all. It is what one thinks of here in America of Chinese music played in chain restaurants. Track 5- Still with strength in her vocals, Candi is becoming more "Candi"...but the traditional instruments (woodwinds, drums, etc) distracts from the song. There is, however, a beautiful guitar introduction to the song that is fabulous. Track 6- Candi is Candi again! Strong song, strong modern music and this one is intriquing. The first up-tempo track on the disk, and one can finally enjoy something about this release. I'm also beginning to understand the "Evolution" she might be aluding to in her title...the progression from whispered vocals and traditional instruments, to strong, dynamtic vocals and modern music. Track 7 is the best yet! Powerful and intense...this is Candi at her best. She shines and the song is mezmerizing. The guitar in this song is intense and wonderful! Very nice riffs. Strong and up-tempo...it will rock you with emotion and her talent! Track 8- this track is Latin themed. The vocals are moving, but it would sound more at home in Spain than China. It's terribly mediocre... Track 9- again, this song has absolutely no roots in China. It is Middle Eastern to the core and makes the listener feel like a wandering Beduoin. It's horrible. Obviously, while trying new things this is NOT a genre that works for Candi. There is mostly heavy drums and flute on this song. One feels the need to pitch a tent and herd sheep... Track 10- Gorgeous piano and lovely, divine vocals. Probably the most refined Candi's voice sounds on the entire CD. It's a touching ballad and really sums up Candi. She is unique...but I think this CD overall is TOO unique. It's too ecclectic, and hard for people to enjoy with all the changes in vocals and music styles. Candi really missed the mark on this CD. I will continue to support her, because I think she honestly TRIED to make a mark with this "theme"...but missed. Hopefully, her next release will be regular pop music that she does so well. Trying to make this release fit a "scheme", didn't work. It's not good at all and Candi is much better than this work demonstrates. I would not advise anyone to buy this unless you LIKE change and poor organization. I found only 3 enjoyable and quality songs: #1, #7, and #10. The rest are disharmonious and disjointed, despite her efforts to cram them into a "theme". Again, I cannot express how disappointed I am in this release. Candi is an excellent singer with a fun flair...and this CD shows none of that. I hope she doesn't fall into oblivion after this fiasco of a CD. It just goes to show: if you pick a "theme" CD...be sure the songs will showcase your ability
