YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Lin Yu Hsien, Taiwanese youth film Exit No. 6 delves into the fast lives of today's lost younger generation. Lin Yu Hsien previously directed 2005's Jump Boys, a documentary about child gymnasts which found unexpected popularity at the box office and went on to win the Best Documentary Award at the Golden Horse Film Awards. In Exit No. 6, his first fictional feature film, Lin explores a topic that he had covered in documentary form before - youth subculture. Set in Taipei's colorful youth mecca Ximending, the film stars television heartthrobs Eddie Peng (My DNA Says I Love You, When Dolphin Met Cat) and Ethan Ruan (Hanazakarino Kimitachihe), as well as actresses Olivia Chen, Yoo Ha Na, and Ya Zi from Blackie's Teenage Club and One Million Star.
Every night, best buds Van Dine (Eddie Peng) and Vance (Ethan Ruan) ply the sleepless streets of Ximending, along with troubled runaway Vivian (Olivia Chen) and girl-next-door Fion (Yoo Ha Na). They run, they scream, they participate in silly and dangerous challenges - all in raucous celebration of aimless youth. But one day Vivian suddenly disappears. When her friends investigate her disappearance, they discover that several other teenage girls also went missing around Ximending that day, and clues point to a mysterious "Autumn Leaves Club".

Teen Angst and...Bill & Ted!
|
Where do all the young dudes go in this film? Exit No. 6, apparently. Still, this is an interesting light angsty teen drama regarding four main young dudes, stuck in those awkward coming of age years of self discovery, disillusion and restrictive parenting. Its zany, lightly rebellious, comic and romantic with four likable teens; two guys and two girls, who each in their respective gender friendships, tackle these personable problems of dispossession and parenting pressures. Its backdrop is about the divide between generations, too, and what the present sense of preferential freedom means to the younger set, against the sometimes control and guidance of an elder demographic. In this case, two young dudes, DJ Van Dine and computer hacker Vance, who face daily circumstances of living life to the full, by attempting crazy antics (don't try this at home, kids!) like rolling down large steps in large tyres and full throttle type car treks whilst video phone recording them - all as a means of feeling alive and staying on top of themselves (and generally ending up in hospital due to their stunt dude aerobics). Alongside these dudes, are two female school friends, Fion and Vivian, who try to come to terms with each other due to a personal rift. Fion and Vivian had renounced parental pressures for them to be professional pianists, so that they wouldn't have to compete against each other, and by making a mutual pact to freeze all their musical awards in a refrigerator - as a means of rejecting such stress inducing competition. But when Vivian plays a rebellious music piece at a school presentation and getting thrown out, for only Fion to then play her own piece to the required perfection (as she couldn't betray her parents) - causes a rift between the two girls. Later when Fion and Vivain meet up again, they find themselves in another form of ironic competition, but this time each falling in love with young dude Van Dine, after the four youths had formed their subculture group. Most of this film's plot is bolted together by the two girl characters here, who definitely are the more interesting and story carrying out of the two groups of friends, as the two guys (who are like Bill and Ted's Bonkers Adventure duo dudes...but lacking a time machine, here) almost seem like supporting elements. They are a fun duo and their antics are more zany and off the wall, whereas the girls are more woven into the central plot. Fion and Vivian also both share empathetical realities concerning their reactions to parental control (each having electronic diaries and parallel thoughts) and the competitiveness they encounter towards each other. Fion being a Korean character also, tries hard to reconcile her displaced feelings of 'betrayal' to her friend Vivian, after she had renegade by performing properly at her piano presentation. Vivian, feeling betrayed and bewildered, then becomes a more hard edged underground rebel girl, towing along with two prostitute girl chums (who she despairs of in her computer diary) and also performs in a rock band (reminding me a little of Priss from Japanese anime "Bubblegum Crises 2033" here) - living in hope of a life without competition, demanding lifestyles and falling in love. The plot thickens with a kidnap element near the latter third, but overall this movie is more a light focused teen flick in the mode of say K-drama series "Over the Rainbow" than an edgy, arty type movie of serious subculture issues - say K-movie "Bye June". So this is about dispossessed youths, but not in the dark and dismal fashion that could make you reach for the Valium. Its light, fun and romantic with additional social commentary that makes it interesting. And the bunch of dudes here are a likable lot, too, with some nice young actors. Interesting, that although this is a Mandarin Taiwanese movie, Korean actress Ha Na Yoo makes an appearance as Fion, that adds a subtle flavor about competition pressures (career, marriage, etc) regarding younger people getting on in life. Worth seeing this, although not a great movie, but certainly for fans of shades and fades teen dramas (not the heavy type) with romantic and light social issue bits. DVD set is very nice with a box enclosing digi pack of two disks with English subtitles for the movie, although none, alas for the bonus disk extras. |
