"A Beautiful Mess"
| Music is always different in everyone's ears. But never has music been this different. I couldn't have said it in better words than what Utada described this album as. Like an aftermath of what an evil scientist tried to create. But for some reason, this album puts you in a nice perspective as the detective that tries to figure out what happened in this lab mess. Overall, this is a very dark album that makes you look deep inside the music in this album. Tracks like "Devil Inside", "Exodus '04", "Kremlin Dusk" and "You Make Me Want To Be A Man" truly stands out on that. This album isn't very mainstream. Exodus '04 is probably the only track that is closest to having a mainstream pop sound (after all, it was Timbaland who produced this song). This is not to say that Utada can't create music. The music here just isn't appealing to the mainstream crowd. But if you give a forgiving chance, you can actually enjoy the music in this album. |

Buy it for Exodus
| I like this CD, yet I must admit I have a huge problem with Utada`s voice. It seems, at times to have no musicality in it whatsoever. It`s extremely flat and unexpressive. If she`d been speaking the lyrics it would probably have made more sense. The only exception is the title track which is dark, somber and magnificent, with a beat all its own, which is not dependent on a singer`s style. I love that song and has bought the maxi single because I know I`ll always enjoy that track! The rest of the songs, well, they`re okay, but not outstanding. The lyrics are quite imaginative at times, but sometimes they get simple and silly. The intentions behind this album appear to have been the best. Too bad it didn`t work out. Maybe she was trying a little bit too hard? |

I don't understand the hate ...
| Probably because the lyrics sometimes are awful (Easy Breezy) or dirty (The Workout) but I don't understand what's wrong with this album for most of you and it's not monotonous either. There is the pop of ''Easy Breezy'', the pop/rock of ''Devil Inside'', the ethnic sound of ''Exodus '04'', the techno/dance of ''You Make Me Want To Be A Man'', the R&B of ''Let Me Give You My Love'' and ''Kremlin Dusk'' is probably the most beautiful song composed by Utada in her entire career. It's a well done album, probably the ones who hate this album are the same who loves the boring ''Flavor Of Life Ballad Version-''. There isn't bad music at all included in Hikki first English album. |

Interesting...
|
This album was interesting. I am a die hard Utada fan and I will admit that this isn't one of her GREATEST works, but there are some pretty catchy songs on this album (like Hotel Lobby, Animato, The Workout, and You Make Me Want to be a Man.) All in all it's nice to hear something in English that's original. I think the problem with this album is that it was TOO original for american listeners. (which is why it sold more internationally than where the language is dominant). America loves rough (and somewhat dirty) lyrics, but Utada didn't do that. Her lyrics are pure... and it takes a fine ear to appreciate them. Have fun with this album and be open minded. |

This album is by-far Hikki's worst, since no one wants to speak up and say so. It flopped in the USA and even some of her most baist fans will admit that it reeked. There's only 3 good tracks in my oppinion: "Devil Inside", "Exodus", and "You Make Me Wanna Be A Man"! The ever-hilarious track, "Easy Breezy", is known to be one of the best tracks...but it's ruined by the lyrics "You're Easy Breezy and I'm Japanesey"...hahahahaha! It's an extremely shallow piece of work you'd never imagine Utada Hikaru singing. I bought it to support Hikki's coming to the USA...but I NEVER listen to it unless it's the 3 songs I named above. If anything, she should've released "Ultra Blue" (singing all the tracks in English) as her debut American release. This was just horrible!!! Most the tracks are the typical sound you'd hear from any American artist. Hikki should've showcased how different from them she is and not how much like them she could be. |
